Google has updated the Translate app to support real-time live translation. Its new AI-powered feature, called Live Translation, lets you have two-way conversations with audio and on-screen translations.
The Google Translate app already offers an option called Conversations, allowing you to have a bilingual chat with someone who speaks a different language. The new Live Translate feature takes it a step further by utilizing Google"s latest AI models to provide a natural conversation experience in over 70 languages.
According to the search giant, the feature can identify conversational pauses, accents, and intonations while you speak. It can easily isolate sounds when you are trying to translate languages at an airport or a noisy cafe. The feature has started rolling out to Android and iOS users living in the US, India, and Mexico.
Google Translate is also getting a new language learning feature, currently in beta on Android and iOS. It lets you improve your listening and speaking skills in a specific language by creating practice sessions based on your skill level and goals.
The generative feature is currently available for English speakers learning Spanish and French. It"s also available for Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers trying to learn English. You"ll find a Practice option at the bottom of your screen in the Translate app to use the feature.
You can pick from the recommended scenarios recommended by the Translate app to start practicing or create your own. The Google Translate app can save your daily progress and award a star after you complete a daily activity. Here"s how the new language learning feature works:
Google notes that people translate over 1 trillion words using Google Translate across Google Search, Lens, and Circle to Search. The search giant is also utilizing its AI prowess to understand ancient languages and provide tools for the cultural preservation of endangered indigenous languages spoken in different regions.
