Google rolled out AI Mode to users living in more than 180 countries globally last month. However, the generative AI feature was only available to English-speaking users at the time. This is changing now as the search giant has added support for five new languages in AI Mode.
Google announced that AI Mode in Google Search is now available in Hindi, Japanese, Indonesian, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese. It further added that the advanced multimodal and reasoning capabilities of the Gemini 2.5 model have helped in understanding the local nuances of a language.
This is a significant expansion for AI Mode as Hindi alone has over 609 million speakers, which includes both first and second language speakers. It ranks third on the list of the most spoken languages after English and Mandarin Chinese, according to the latest data from Ethnologue. Indonesian (252.4 million) and Japanese (125.6 million) have also made it to the top 20 on the list.
AI mode debuted earlier this year as an upgraded version of AI Overviews, which is another generative AI feature in Google Search that creates summaries for users" queries. AI Mode uses a "query fan-out" technique, where it performs multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources before combining them into a comprehensive response.
Google updated AI Mode in the later months with a custom version of the Gemini 2.5 model and a Search Live option that lets you have back-and-forth conversations. AI Mode has also added support for data visualization and graphs for finance-related queries. Additionally, you can stream your live camera feed to AI Mode for better results.
The search giant pushed some advanced agentic and personalization features to AI Mode alongside the launch of the Pixel 10 series last month. It can find restaurant reservations after considering your preferences for the party size, times, location, and preferred cuisine.
