Google's new Gemini tools make switching from ChatGPT easier

ChatGPT has emerged as a clear leader in the consumer generative AI market, with around 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers. While competitors such as Google’s Gemini offer similar features and capabilities, users are not switching away from ChatGPT.

One key reason appears to be continuity. ChatGPT can reference past conversations and respond with context, making interactions more personalized over time. In contrast, when users start using a new GenAI assistant like Gemini, they often have to begin from scratch without that historical context.

To solve this issue, Google today announced new switching tools that will allow users to easily bring their memories, context, and chat history from other AI apps, including ChatGPT, directly into Gemini.

First, the new memory import feature will allow users to import their key preferences, relationships, and personal context. To do this, users have to go to Settings and select the new import option. Users will be presented with a suggested prompt to copy and paste into ChatGPT. Users then have to copy and paste the response provided by ChatGPT into Gemini. Gemini will then use this information and provide better responses for users" prompts.

A few months back, Gemini introduced a Personal Intelligence capability that can deliver responses based on the information available from Gmail, Google Photos, Google Search history, and past Gemini chats. In addition to the memory import feature, users now have the ability to import their full chat history from other AI chat services like ChatGPT.

Users have to go to ChatGPT and download their chat history. Then, they can just upload a ZIP file of the chat history into Gemini. Once the import is complete, users will be able to search their past conversation threads and even continue those conversations if required.

Google is also renaming its “past chats” feature to “memory,” and this change will be rolling out in the Gemini app over the next few weeks.
