It"s the second Tuesday of the month, which means it"s Patch Tuesday time again. As such, today, Microsoft is rolling out the monthly security update (also called "B release") for October 2025 on Windows Server 20H2 and Windows 10 for the latest supported versions, 20H2, 21H2, and 22H2.
The new updates are being distributed under KB5066791, bumping up the builds to 19044.6456 and 19045.6456. You can find standalone links to download the new update on the Microsoft Update Catalog at this link. This is the final Patch for Windows 10 as support for the OS has ended today.
The major highlight of the release is security patches and bug fixes. The changelog is given below:
[Input and Composition]
-
Fixed: An issue with the Chinese Input Method Editor (IME). Private Unicode characters were shown incorrectly and did not meet GB18030 standard.
-
Fixed: An issue that affects USER32 Edit controls. Surrogate pairs appear as empty boxes when text fields reach their length limit.
[Windows Remote Management (WinRM)]
-
Fixed: An issue that affects PowerShell Remoting and WinRM in which commands time out after 600 seconds.
[Licensing]
-
New! This update introduces a servicing stack update (SSU) which incorporates an updated certificate chain to improve Azure environment validation. For more information, see the servicing stack update section.
[Fax modem driver]
-
This update removes the ltmdm64.sys driver. Fax modem hardware dependent on this specific driver will no longer work in Windows.
This release has no known issues.
Some of the older Windows 10 versions have also received updates today, which have been listed below with their respective release notes (KB) linked as well as links to download them at Microsoft"s Update Catalog:
| Version | KB | Build | Download | Support |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1809 | 17763.7919 | Update Catalog | Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) | |
| 1607 | 14393.8519 | Update Catalog | ||
| 1507 | 10240.21161 | Update Catalog |
It is noteworthy that Windows 10 20H2 and Windows 10 1909 reached the end of servicing. Non-LTSC editions of 21H2 have also reached the end of servicing.
Alongside the update, Microsoft has also published details on how to deal with this huge change. The company writes:
What are my options for staying supported on a Windows operating system?
- Installing Windows 11 on your current PC - If your PC meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 and is eligible to upgrade directly to Windows 11, you might have already received a notification about upgrading. To check if your PC is eligible for the free upgrade go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- New PC with Windows 11 - If your PC is not eligible, or if you want a new PC with Windows 11 pre-installed, you might want to start by exploring the latest Windows 11 PCs. This tool will help you find the right PC based on your unique needs.
- Extended Security Updates (ESU) program - If you need more time before moving to a Copilot+ PC or other new Windows 11 device, the consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program can protect your Windows 10 device up to a year after October 14, 2025.

Obviously, Microsoft wants you to get a new PC if you can not update due to your PC being unsupported. In that case, Linux is also an option and recently LibreOffice maker pointed out ten compelling reasons why you may want to switch.
