MachineGames isn't done with Wolfenstein just yet

The soft reboot that spawned fresh Wolfenstein games under MachineGames and Bethesda was a massive hit back in 2014. Three years later, a full sequel arrived, taking the story of William "B.J." Blazkowicz further in this alternate history shooter. While a third mainline entry has yet to materialize, it looks like MachineGames is itching to get back into it to make it a complete trilogy.

In the new Noclip documentary (via IGN) featuring the Swedish studio, thoughts behind the franchise and its future were shared by some MachineGames veterans.

"The first game is very much about B.J. and how he understands that the Nazis have won the war, but it’s also a very personal journey for him, But at the same time, he meets Anya, he starts to see that there are other things at play as well, not only fighting Nazis," says studio co-founder and head Jerk Gustafsson. "And then, moving into New Colossus, then we move into a wider group of people around you, being part of the resistance, something bigger and something also like a family to you, but at the same time you’re also preparing to start maybe your own family."

As for a third entry featuring Blazkowicz, he says that the studio isn"t done with Wolfenstein just yet, adding that "we have a story to tell."

"I think this is important to say, because we have always seen this as a trilogy," continues Gustafsson. "So that journey for BJ, even during those first weeks at id, when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for at least that character."

MachineGames has been quite busy since Wolfenstein 2"s release in 2017. It co-developed the spin-off games Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Cyberpilot, made mission packs for classic Quake, Quake II, and Doom II enhanced versions, and most recently, made the widely well-received Indiana Jones and the Great Circle in 2024.

With the Indiana Jones adventure and the promised DLC now behind it, the Microsoft-owned studio should be starting up its next gaming project. We will have to wait and see if it will be a new Wolfenstein game to tie off the series, another Indiana Jones entry, or an entirely new IP altogether.
