Meta is adding the group chats feature to its social media platform Threads. With this feature, users will be able to send messages to multiple people instead of sending one-to-one DMs. The one-on-one direct message feature was added in June this year, and now the platform is getting the ability for group chats.
Threads users can now create a group consisting of up to 50 people and start group chats. Only people who follow the user on Threads can be added to the group to prevent misuse. According to Meta, this will make "it easier to connect, share, and dive deeper into the topics you love."
Users can give their group chat a unique name that could be something that reflects the topic of discussion, people in the group, or anything. Naming a group chat will allow users to quickly identify it and engage in conversations, similar to Facebook Messenger.
Meta spokesperson Alec Booker told The Verge that the group chat support in Threads is rolling out globally except for the UK and Australia. Booker noted that the company is working on expanding the messaging feature in these regions "as quickly as possible."
In their official announcement, Meta also shared that Threads will also get the option to invite people to group chats by sharing a link in the near future. This will negate the need to add them to the group individually.
Aside from this, Threads is also expanding its entire messaging features, which include individual and group chats, messaging controls, privacy settings, a hidden folder, and support for media, to users across the EU. These features will be landing on the Threads app in the EU in the coming days.
Meta has reaffirmed its commitment to listening to feedback and will continue to refine the Threads messaging feature based on user input.
