Microsoft boosts AI usage limits for Personal and Family 365 subscribers

Along with access to fully-featured desktop Office apps, a Microsoft 365 Family and Personal subscription comes with AI-powered features like Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Designer.

However, the AI-powered features come with usage limits. The primary subscriber of a Microsoft 365 Family and Personal plan receives 60 AI credits each month. Each user interaction with an AI feature will deduct one credit from the overall balance. If a subscriber runs out of credits, they can subscribe to Copilot Pro for unlimited access.

Today, Microsoft announced that it is bringing higher AI usage limits to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers:

  • Unlimited image generation in the Copilot app, Microsoft 365 Copilot app, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps
  • Unlimited Voice in the Copilot app; coming soon to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook with higher usage limits
  • Podcasts (available in the Copilot app)
  • Vision (available in the Copilot app)
  • Deep Research (available in the Copilot app)

Along with the higher usage limits, Microsoft also announced today the availability of a new Copilot Chat experience for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers.

Microsoft also announced the ability for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers to use the Copilot feature inside organizations. Similar to Microsoft 365 enterprise accounts, Microsoft 365 Personal and Family accounts can be used with Enterprise Data Protection in Copilot.

To use Microsoft 365 Copilot with Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents at work, users should first sign in with the Microsoft account associated with their Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium subscription and then open a file saved in their organization’s OneDrive or SharePoint. As expected, IT admins can enable or disable this feature based on their organizational policy.

Finally, Microsoft is expanding the one-year free Microsoft 365 Personal subscription to most markets worldwide for university students through October 31, 2025.
