Microsoft revealed new icons for the Office suite of apps last year, and though they"ve begun making their way to users across many platforms, the company hadn"t yet updated the corresponding filetype icons. That is, the icons for files that can be opened with the Office apps hadn"t been shown off yet.
That"s changing, though, as Microsoft"s Erin Woo, from the Outlook team, has posted a short video on Twitter showing off some of the new icons. The icons for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote files share some of the visual elements with the ones for the apps themselves, specifically the colored square with the app"s corresponding initial inside.
Along with icons for Office-related files, the video also includes icons for file types such as images, audio, and video. As the tweet points out, these icons are now rolling out inside the Outlook and OneDrive mobile apps, so these are likely the icons that you"ll see for those file types when using Microsoft apps. What"s unclear is whether we"ll see them in Windows 10 as well.
Of course, many of the icons remain a mystery, just like the ones for Office apps themselves. Microsoft has yet to show off new icons for tools such as Access or Publisher, and it may take some time for the company to achieve the same level of uniformity it had before.
