If you regularly read Neowin, you probably know about the Windows 11-based Validation OS. But for those unaware, it"s a lightweight and fast variant of Windows 11 that hardware vendors can leverage to test, validate and repair hardware defects during the manufacturing process of Windows PCs on the factory floor. Initially released in 2022 and updated multiple times since then, Microsoft has now updated the Validation OS ISOs again with enhancements and fixes.
The latest version of Windows 11 ISO is called the Validation OS 2601 release, with the ISOs hosting the 26100.7705.260126-1049 prefix. It contains numerous improvements such as the ability to manage Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) offline via the Microsoft-WinVOS-RETools optional package. In addition, the following functionalities are also supported via optional packages:
- Added support to Remote Access Service (RAS) via the new Microsoft-WinVOS-RAS optional package.
- [x64-only] Enhanced Printing support via the new Microsoft-WinVOS-Printing optional package.
- Added support for System Event Notification Service (SENS) via the existing Microsoft-WinVOS-COM optional package.
- Included Security Support Provider Interface (Secur32) in the base Validation OS image.
That said, there is one known issue in this build. This relates to trying to include the Serial Console (SAC) support feature on some arm64 systems, which will become unstable and fail to boot. The only way to mitigate this problem is to enable this feature during initial image customization.
Additionally, Microsoft has noted that since Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) is on the way out in Windows 11, once that happens, the same will apply to Validation OS too.
While all of this may sound pretty interesting, this OS is probably not meant for most of our readers. This Windows 11-based OS boots directly into a command line interface (CLI) but is capable of running Win32 apps. Microsoft claims that this user experience increases reliability on factory floors.
