Minecraft Mounts of Mayhem update is adding an underwater mount with a surprising benefit

A new Minecraft Live just wrapped up, and just as Mojang promised, it revealed details about the next major update hitting the sandbox. The drop has the name Mounts of Mayhem, and to match it, the studio announced a brand-new mount that lets players explore the depths of the ocean without caring for air.

The Nautilus is this brand-new animal. Spawning in the depths of the oceans, these underwater mobs with their giant shells can be tamed by players using pufferfish. Like with other mounts, a saddle can then be used to ride them all across the waters. It even has a dash ability to get around quickly and can do small jumps above the water as well. Meanwhile, for players looking to keep their Nautilus safe, copper, iron, gold, diamond, or Netherite armor can be given to their new mount.

However, the biggest benefit to having a Nautilus mount is its new "Breath of the Nautilus" effect. This will permanently pause the breath meter on the player that"s riding the Nautilus, offering unlimited exploration time underwater. It"s not all good news, though, as zombie Nautiluses have also been confirmed, which the Drowned will be riding when hunting players underwater.

Next, Mojang"s latest weapon addition to Minecraft is the Spear. Crafted with two sticks and an ingot, it has both a jab and a charged attack, with the latter toppling horse riders off their mounts when hit. The Spear seems to be very effective in mounted combat, too, letting players use momentum to deal more damage than usual.

The last reveal today was for another zombie addition, with Zombie Horses coming to Survival mode. Previously only available in Creative mode, this hostile mob can be ridden by zombies with spears for fast assaults on players. They will still burn in sunlight like other undead enemies.

Of course, this is just the announcement of the new update. Like with its previous major content updates, Mojang usually has more than a few features as surprises for players as its full release draws nearer.

The Mounts of Mayhem update will be available for players to test via the Bedrock Edition preview and Java Edition snapshots soon, according to Mojang. Everyone else will be able to jump in once the update is deemed ready for the masses, which should be before 2026.
