Nvidia begins teasing an event for August 31

Nvidia"s most recent family of graphics cards, the GeForce RTX 20 series, is almost two years old, and though the company refreshed the lineup with the RTX Super cards last year, it"s about time we get a proper upgrade. Today, the GPU maker began teasing some sort of event on Twitter, using the hashtag #UltimateCountdown.

Though the company"s tweets have been far from clear, its new header image on Twitter reads "21 days. 21 years.", which is in reference to the announcement of GeForce 256. This graphics card was first announced on August 31, 1999, meaning it will turn 21 years old in exactly 21 days. Nvidia refers to it as the world"s first GPU, and it was the first product to use the GeForce name, so the celebration makes sense.

For months, rumors have floated around that Nvidia is preparing to launch the RTX 30 series of GPUs, and the anniversary of its first GeForce GPU certainly seems like a plausible time to do it. Some rumors have hinted at the performance gains in one of the new GPUs, with benchmarks scores comparing an unnamed GPU to the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti.

It"s likely the company will let out more tidbits about the event as we approach the aforementioned date. Nvidia"s Twitter profile bio reads "look back before looking forward", so we could simply get a look at the company"s history leading up to the big reveal.
