OpenAI Codex hits general availability with new Slack integration

Back in May, OpenAI launched a research preview of Codex, its cloud-based coding agent. Since then, this AI agent has received multiple updates, with September seeing the launch of GPT-5-Codex, a model optimized for agentic coding in Codex. At its annual DevDay 2025 event today, OpenAI has announced that Codex is finally ready for prime time and is now generally available.

OpenAI has boasted that since August, daily usage of Codex has increased by a factor of 10, while GPT-5-Codex has served 40 trillion tokens in the past three weeks or so. The company says that Codex has been quickly adopted in various engineering workflows, and as such, it is announcing three new features that should enhance productivity even further.

The first is a new Slack integration for Codex, which allows customers to delegate tasks directly from a channel or chat thread. You can do this by simply invoking the AI assistance by @Codex tagging, and it will automatically infer the context of the conversation and have the task done on your behalf on Codex Cloud. You will have control over whether you want to merge the AI-generated code or not.

Next, we have the Codex SDK, which is described as follows:

GPT‑5-Codex was trained for Codex—specifically, the open-source agent implementation that powers the Codex CLI. We also tuned the agent implementation so that its prompt, tool definitions, and agent loop deliver faster and more accurate results with models like GPT‑5-Codex.

With the Codex SDK, you can bring the same agent into your own engineering workflows and apps with just a few lines of code. It provides structured outputs for parsing agent responses and built-in context management to resume sessions. The SDK is available for TypeScript today, with more languages coming soon.

Finally, ChatGPT admins now have more control over Codex in their workspace, which boils down to setting safer defaults, removing sensitive data, cleaning up unused environments, and leveraging analytics dashboards.

It is important to note that the first two features are available to developers on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise plans starting today, while the new admin features will be available to Business, Edu, and Enterprise SKUs. And in case you missed it, do check out the new app integration and SDK in ChatGPT, announced today.
