OpenAI to deploy custom ChatGPT version for US military

The Pentagon launched the GenAI.mil enterprise AI platform last year. At launch, Google Cloud"s Gemini for Government was made available inside GenAI.mil to allow contractors and military personnel to make use of generative AI capabilities.

Today, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT is coming to GenAI.mil. OpenAI will be deploying a custom version of ChatGPT that can be used for all unclassified work. To ensure a high level of security, the deployed ChatGPT system will run on authorized government cloud infrastructure with all the built-in safety controls and protections needed for the Department’s highly sensitive data.

OpenAI envisions that ChatGPT can support military members in their day-to-day tasks, including summarizing and analyzing policy and guidance documents, drafting and reviewing procurement and contracting materials, and generating reports, checklists, and more.

OpenAI highlighted that the data processed in this isolated ChatGPT system will remain inside the government environment, and it will not use any data to train or improve its public or commercial models. Additionally, the GenAI models deployed on GenAI.mil will have safeguards at the model and platform level to support all lawful uses.

The Pentagon wrote the following regarding ChatGPT"s availability on the GenAI.mil platform:

This initiative is a direct execution of the War Department"s AI Acceleration Strategy released last month, and acts on the mandate of President Trump"s White House AI Action Plan. The War Department is building an AI ecosystem for speed, security, and enduring mission impact. Integrating ChatGPT into GenAI.mil marks another critical step in making frontier AI capabilities the standard for daily operations.

This is not OpenAI’s first engagement with U.S. defense. The company has previously worked with DARPA on efforts aimed at strengthening cyber defense capabilities and supporting teams tasked with detecting and responding to sophisticated threats. More recently, OpenAI also announced a pilot program earlier this year with the Department of Defense’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO), exploring practical ways frontier AI could streamline and modernize Pentagon operations.
