Although OpenAI"s ChatGPT started off as a simple chatbot, it has evolved over time to offer several other functionalities too. This includes its Codex coding assistant, as well as integrations with Teams, Gmail, Outlook, Google Drive, and other services. Now, OpenAI has announced another ChatGPT integration, and this one might have some people a bit worried.
Basically, ChatGPT will now be able to provide a personalized finance experience once you connect it to your bank account through a connector offered by Plaid, which securely links to over 12,000 financial institutions, including American Express, Bank of America, Charles Schwab, and Robinhood. This is a natural first-party solution in OpenAI"s eyes, because it claims that over 200 million converse with ChatGPT monthly to discuss budgeting issues.
Since ChatGPT will be able to read your bank statements in detail, it will be able to provide specialized guidance regarding expenditure based on the provided context, rather than giving generic advice. You"ll be able to ask complex questions like:
- Help me build a plan to buy a house in my area in the next 5 years
- I"m saving up to buy a car early next year, how do I do this?
- I still owe my parents $2,000 for the loan they gave me, how do I feasibly repay it?
- Help me come up with a plan to save a little bit more in the next few months.
ChatGPT seemingly isn"t offering agentic actions in this experience right now, which is good because it"s connected to your real financial data. As of now, when you connect to your financial account via Plaid and authenticate, ChatGPT will take a few minutes to ingest your relevant data and begin categorizing it. After that, it will present a dashboard containing details about your current expenditures, upcoming payments, and more. Following that, you"ll also be able to ask it questions about your finances.
OpenAI has emphasized that your data will remain private and secure. ChatGPT will only have access to balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities. It will not be able to view your full account number or make changes to your account. Additionally, it is possible to delink your financial account and delete ChatGPT"s memories of it.
Right now, this financial experience will default to GPT-5.5 Thinking, OpenAI"s latest reasoning model, which makes sense considering that it"ll be working in a complex, context-dependent environment. Currently, OpenAI is previewing this capability with a subset of Pro subscribers in the U.S. General availability along with Intuit integration is planned for later.
