Pinterest's new AI tool allows users to tune down AI-generated content

Pinterest is introducing new tools on its platform to give users more control and transparency over generative AI content. The platform will now allow users to customize how much AI content they want to see in specific categories, new genAI labels, and an appeals system for any disputes.

Matt Madrigal, Chief Technology Officer at Pinterest, said in a statement:

“Our community is at the heart of everything we do. With our new GenAI controls, we’re empowering people to personalize their Pinterest experience more than ever—striking the right balance between human creativity and AI innovation, and ensuring every feed truly reflects what inspires them most.”

Pinterest users will be able to tune how much AI-generated content they would like to see on the platform with the help of the updated tuner. The platform will be able to identify AI content using improved labeling methods, such as a combination of image metadata assessment and AI classifiers that detect AI content even when it"s not obvious.

To update their preferences, users can go to the Settings on Pinterest and visit “refine your recommendations.” From there, users can easily adjust and see fewer GenAI images in each supported category. Users can also click on the three dots and select any Pin that they don"t want to see to update their preferences accordingly.

For creators concerned about their content being wrongly flagged, Pinterest has also implemented an appeals system, allowing users to raise a dispute.

With the ability to tune down AI-generated content, Pinterest is also addressing advertiser concerns by enabling brands to avoid their ads appearing next to unwanted AI content.

Pinterest isn"t the only one pushing for clearer AI labels, as platforms such as Google, Microsoft, and Meta are also moving towards clearer AI content disclosures that will help users differentiate between what"s AI-generated and what"s not.
