AI is becoming more and more prevalent each day, across various sectors including personal, enterprise, education, and government. As such, it has become essential to develop laws that regulate the use and abuse of AI. To that end, the UK government announced a big AI plan earlier this year, raising £14 billion (~$19 billion) in investments in just 48 hours following its reveal. Now, U.S. President Donald Trump has also revealed an action plan that actually aims to accelerate AI adoption rather than restrict it.
The AI Action Plan developed under President Trump"s directive can be found on the dedicated government website here. It is based on three principles: accelerating AI innovation, building American AI infrastructure, and leading in international AI diplomacy and security.
Starting with the first one, the AI Action Plan emphasizes that America "must have" the most powerful AI systems in the world, as they will promote economic growth and lead to the creation of new jobs. As such, it is essential to remove red tape and regulations in this area, encourage open-source AI development, invest in "AI-enabled science", and increase the adoption of AI in government sectors, as well as the Department of Defense (DoD).
The next principle compares America"s progress to China, noting that the former should build out its grid system further to support energy generation demands, too. This can be done by building secure energy infrastructure, bolstering the U.S." semiconductor manufacturing processes, developing data centers to support military and intelligence use, and training a skilled workforce responsible for leveraging these systems.
Finally, the U.S. wants to focus on driving the adoption of American-made AI models, hardware, and standards across the globe. This involves exporting technologies to allies, combating "Chinese influence in international governance bodies", and investing in biosecurity.
With these three principles governing his AI Action Plan, President Trump wants the U.S. to achieve global dominance in the AI race. The head of state believes that his plan will usher in a new era of "human flourishing" and improve national security standards, too.
