In the past few weeks, the sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary has been breaking quite a few records at the box office, even becoming Amazon MGM"s highest-grossing movie ever. The original Andy Weir-written story will be expanding beyond books and theaters next, as a tie-in game dubbed Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars has been announced. This will be a mixed reality and virtual reality experience developed by Maze Theory.
Beware that there are spoilers for the book and movie below.
The tie-in game brings Ryland Grace as the protagonist for players to take the role of, and much like in the original story, they will be working with the Eridian Rocky to solve problems and to keep the Hail Mary alive.
What"s interesting is the setting, as it seems this will follow a canon storyline that will expand on the widely well-received human and alien partnership to save both their planets.
"Since creating Project Hail Mary a few years ago, fans have been waiting for more," said Andy Weir, author of the book. "This is the first step outside of what happens in the book and movie that you can experience in mixed reality."
A video with snippets of gameplay and reactions to the mixed-reality experience from Andy Weir as well as the movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller was also released today. Watch it below.
The developer, Maze Theory, has created a number of VR and mixed reality experiences previously based on well-known IPs. This included a Peaky Blinders game, a Thief VR title, and three Doctor Who experiences.
"Step into an untold chapter of the Hail Mary mission. Diagnose failing systems, improvise scientific solutions, and work alongside Rocky to keep humanity’s last hope alive," reveals Maze Theory about its newest project.
The Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars game will be releasing across major mixed reality and VR platforms sometime in late 2026. It has revealed the Pico 4, Meta Quest 3, and Quest 3s as platforms so far. The developer plans to reveal more information on the gameplay and other platforms as well as kick off a pre-registration phase in the coming months.
