Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S5 to launch in January

Though the Galaxy S4 hasn’t been on the market for that long, the latest report claims Samsung is already getting ready to launch its next flagship phone, the Galaxy S5, with a launch date as early as next January.

According to this report, which cites “people inside Samsung”, the giant company is displeased with the sluggish sales of the S4. Apparently, even though the current Galaxy handset broke previous sales records, its numbers are still below expectations. As such the Korean based company has decided to advance the release date of their next Android flagship to January of next year, up from the previously scheduled March release.

Samsung has already publicly confirmed the Galaxy S5 will feature 64-bit support, similar to the latest chip from Apple, and according to this report it will also include a fingerprint scanner, an octa-core CPU, and a 16 Mpx camera with Samsung’s latest sensor and OIS technology. The new handset will also supposedly run Android Kit Kat out of the box.

While this info may be accurate it also raises up some questions. For example, if the current Galaxy S4 is selling below expectations ahead of the holidays what chance does a new, more expensive device have in January, when most companies usually go through a post-holiday downturn? And does Samsung actually have a chance of reaching those impossibly high sales expectations?

We’ll have to wait and see if this turns out to be true, and what Samsung is actually up to next year.
