Samsung said to be working on a standalone VR headset of its own to take on Oculus and Vive

Samsung recently took the wraps off the updated Gear VR headset at the Mobile World Congress 2017 and the VR-ready Gear 360 camera at its Unpacked event, alongside the Galaxy S8 and S8+. However, the company seems to have bigger plans for VR and even experessed interest in augmented reality.

Two weeks prior to the recent Unpacked event, Samsung"s VP of Marketing for its mobile business, Lee Young-hee revealed that the company is developing high-end VR headsets, which will be targeted towards professionals such as media creators and pro gamers.

The current Gear VR headset is said to be a play towards making VR part of the company"s smartphone experience. Apart from Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, there aren"t many major brands that are working on high-end headsets yet, and Samsung definitely has some time to deliver a high-quality experience.

On the augmented reality front, Microsoft is hard at work with the HoloLens, which is slowly catching the eye of developers and scientists who have been experimenting with the device. It will be interesting to see if Samsung can bring something to the table that combines both of these experiences, but it is still far from launch and many things can change.
