Six years after reveal, Riot's League of Legends fighting game 2XKO is out next month

Riot Games, the video game company that"s known for its wealth of competitive multiplayer games like League of Legends and Valorant, is now officially moving to take a crack at the fighting game genre. It has been five years since the company announced multiple new gaming projects under its studios, and 2XKO, formerly known as Project L, is now finally receiving an early access launch.

The title has been in closed beta for a couple of weeks now, with Riot testing its large-scale online systems while gathering gameplay feedback on the Vi and Blitzcrank characters.

2XKO is entering early access on October 7, landing exclusively on Steam as its first platform. While the title is also confirmed for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, no release timeframes have been announced for the consoles yet.

"This is when we’re rolling out our very first full-feature version of the game, including a full season of content and a few new features like combo trials," explained Riot. "Starting in Early Access, there won’t be any more content resets. That means anything you unlock after October 7 is yours to keep."

For those in the dark, 2XKO is a 2v2 tag-team experience featuring League of Legends characters. The controls involve light, medium, and heavy attacks as well as unique special moves for each character. The fast-paced movement has players using dashes, jumps, and air dashes. The tag system means that the primary and assist characters can be swapped or be used in combos during fights as well.

2XKO Season 0 will be kicking off when Steam early access begins on October 7, with five more seasons coming up in 2026. Each of these content packs will include a new playable champion, a rank reset, a fresh battle pass, and other changes. This also means that the start of Season 0 will include a brand-new character, which bumps up the number to 10 fighters.
