Software giant Sage says 'internal login' was used for unauthorised access to customer data

Sage, a major global supplier of business software - including accounting, CRM and enterprise resource planning tools - has admitted to a security breach, which has potentially compromised the data of some of its corporate customers.

In a statement published on its homepage, it said:

We believe there has been some unauthorised access using an internal login to the data of a small number of our UK customers so we are working closely with the authorities to investigate the situation.

Our customers are always our first priority so we are communicating directly with those who may be affected and giving guidance on measures they can take to protect their security.

An unnamed source at Sage revealed to Reuters that personal employee details of around 280 British companies were potentially exposed in the breach. The source said that the company is still trying to establish if any data had been stolen.

Sage said that it "cannot comment further whilst we work with the authorities to investigate".

Sage is one of the UK"s biggest technology companies, with around 6.2 million business customers around the world, and employing 13,000 people in 23 countries.
