Last November, Microsoft made it possible to save and sync passkeys across devices. Now, according to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, the Redmond giant is expanding this capability to enterprise customers starting next month. In its post on M365 Roadmap, Microsoft writes:
“Microsoft Edge is introducing support for passkey synchronization for enterprise users, enabling secure, passwordless authentication across devices. Passkeys created in Edge can now be synced seamlessly, improving sign-in experience while maintaining strong security standards.”
For those unaware, passkeys are a relatively new alternative to passwords that are increasingly being supported by websites and browsers. Recently, the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has updated its guidance on passkeys, recommending them over passwords as their first choice.
The NCSC said that passkeys now represent a more secure and user-friendly login method. It even recommended that businesses use it as their default authentication option to offer to customers.
If you’ve not used a passkey before, once you’ve created it and stored it in your browser’s password manager, it pops up as an option when you go to login. Usually, you will verify the sign-in using something like a fingerprint, face unlock, screen lock, or PIN. Passkeys eliminate the need to remember passwords and eliminate the chance of users reusing passwords.
By bringing support for this technology to enterprise customers, Microsoft could help to seriously improve security of businesses. Enterprise customers will be able to benefit from this change from June. To learn more, check out the M365 Roadmap.
