Spotify has announced a major collaboration with Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe to develop what the company calls "responsible, artist-first AI music products".
The music streaming company will create new artificial intelligence tools to create music, but says that it won"t hurt the income or take away rights from real artists.
Alex Norström, Co-President and Chief Business Officer of Spotify, said:
“Technology should always serve artists, not the other way around. Our focus at Spotify is making sure innovation supports artists by protecting their rights, respecting their creative choices, and creating new ways for fans to discover and enjoy the music they love.”
Spotify says that the collaboration is guided by four core principles:
- New partnerships: Spotify will work through direct licensing agreements with labels, distributors, and publishers to create AI products for artists and fans, avoiding risky legal approaches through upfront deals instead.
- Choice in participation: Artists and rights holders will have full control over whether and how they participate in AI-powered initiatives, acknowledging varying opinions within the artistic community.
- Fair compensation and new revenue streams: The company"s AI tools would be designed to generate new revenue channels, ensuring artists and songwriters receive appropriate compensation and transparent credits for their work.
- Enhancing artist-fan connections: Spotify says that AI products are intended to augment, not replace, human creativity and provide new interactive avenues for deeper engagement between artists and their audiences.
Spotify added that it understands the importance of copyright protection and even rejected calls from some tech voices to abolish it, stating that musicians" rights are essential. The company warned that if the music industry doesn"t lead the responsible integration of AI, innovation will proceed without consent, rights, or fair compensation for creators.
Spotify is pushing its other AI initiatives, with the company announcing wider availability and rollout of its AI-powered DJ, personalized playlists, and AI-assisted discovery tools.
