Although Teams has a rather controversial reputation in many circles, there is no denying that it is one of the most popular online collaboration and communication tools in the enterprise space. Microsoft regularly adds new features to Teams, such as audio recaps of meetings and an enhanced experience in Amazon Workspaces. Now, the company has announced the availability of a dedicated Channel Agent in Teams.
Channel Agent in Teams does exactly what it says on the tin. It is a productivity-focused AI software that is responsible for managing certain tedious tasks autonomously within Teams channels. If you create a channel, an agent of the same name will automatically be assigned to it. Customers have the ability to invite this Channel Agent into meetings and group chats where it can leverage conversations, meeting content, and Planner boards to handle certain tasks on your behalf.
Some of Channel Agent"s abilities include the generation of Loop reports from channel and meeting activity, and answering questions based on channel content, Planner boards, and the web. It can autonomously identify and track tasks in Planner and offer updates based on action items, while also leveraging user input to schedule meetings. It is particularly useful in preparing recaps for lengthy discussions, organizing projects, and creating action items based on a meeting.
Existing Teams channel members can simply use the Add agents and bots option on the top-right corner of the Teams channel to add the Channel Agent to their stream. It can be removed from the same menu, and IT admins have the capability to turn it off completely too.
There are a few known limitations though. Channel Agents cannot be added to other channels and 1:1 chats. Additionally, it can only be added by members who have access to the channel"s full chat history. Finally, as expected, it requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license to activate. The feature is currently available in public preview for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and the web.
