Twitch forms new council to guide its safety policies

Twitch announced today the creation of a new review board that will provide guidance on its policies regarding safety, moderation, healthy streaming, and more. The Safety Advisory Council comprises online safety experts and creators that Twitch believes "have a deep understanding of Twitch, its content, and its community".

The council will work to inform Twitch"s draft for new policies and policy updates and development of safety features. It will also guide the service"s efforts to advance healthy streaming and work-life balance habits. Finally, the council will help to protect the interests of marginalized groups and identify trends with a potential impact on the Twitch experience.

Council members include:

  • Alex Holmes - Deputy CEO at non-profit The Diana Award and founder of support program Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
  • CohhCarnage - a Twitch Partner and founder of the positive community “The Cohhilition”
  • Cupahnoodle - a partnered Twitch Ambassador and host/commentator
  • Emma Llansó - Director of the Center for Democracy & Technology’s Free Expression Project
  • FerociouslySteph - a Twitch partner who was among the first streamers to bring a transgender pride flag emote to the platform
  • Dr. Sameer Hinduja - a Professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University and Co-Director of the Cyberbullying Research Center
  • T.L. Taylor - a Professor of Comparative Media Studies at MIT and co-founder and Director of Research for AnyKey with a focus on fair and inclusive esports
  • Zizaran - a Twitch partner whose streams focus on ARPGs (Path of Exile in particular)

Twitch says the members have been chosen "based on their familiarity with the Twitch community and their relevant personal and professional experiences". The Amazon-owned streaming service adds that the new council is just part of its efforts to address trust and safety issues on the platlform.
