After several games that took the RPG route, the Assassin"s Creed series returned to its original stealth action elements with the 2023 installment Mirage. Set during the Islamic Golden Age in the ninth century, the title once again put players into the role of an assassin going after the precursors to the Templar order. While it looked like Ubisoft had moved on from the smaller-scope experience, a surprise announcement today revealed a brand-new story expansion.
Announced on stage at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this new story chapter will take our protagonist, Basim Ibn Ishaq, out of the game"s Baghdad setting and into 9th-century AlUla. This ancient Arabian oasis city is located near Saudi Arabia.
While it"s a surprising development for a seemingly "content completed" game, in an unconfirmed report from LesEchoes earlier this year, it was hinted that the Savvy Games Group investor that"s based in Saudi Arabia had made a deal with Ubisoft. This would reportedly involve commissioning new content for the two-year-old title.
According to Ubisoft, the DLC content will include a brand-new story chapter and missions set in the aforementioned AlUla region, letting Basim parkour and assassinate through a fresh group of foes. Available free for all owners of the game, the major update will also carry gameplay improvements per the studio. Unfortunately, no specifics were mentioned today regarding these changes.

The unnamed free DLC release will be happening sometime in 2025. Don"t forget that Ubisoft Bordeaux is also working on the Claws of Awaji expansion for Assassin"s Creed Shadows, which launches in September.
Developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux as its primary developer, Mirage was touted as taking the series back to its stealth action roots. This meant it was offering much higher focus on city gameplay, with parkour returning as a major factor alongside stealth and assassinations. The title was also first formed as an expansion for Valhalla but was later expanded into a standalone experience with a larger scope.
