Warhammer 40K is the next Total War setting, coming to PC, Xbox, and PlayStation

Creative Assembly already announced a new Total War game earlier this month, unveiling Medieval III as its next historical venture. However, just as it promised, at The Game Awards 2025 showcase today, the developer had another Total War reveal, announcing the next fictional universe it is entering to be Warhammer 40,000.

This will be the first time that Total War heads to the future. In the overworld turn-based gameplay, instead of a map showing nearby regions, players will be expanding throughout the galaxy. This will involve capturing planets, upgrading fleets, and managing the economy as the galactic war continues.

The ground combat will be as visceral as ever too, with the developer touting war-torn planets with destructible terrain and diverse biomes for players to control their armies in. Elite squads that rain in from the sky, war machines to take out entire hordes, and strategic abilities to turn even the biggest battles are confirmed too.

At launch, the title will offer four factions for players to lead in campaigns, which are Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks, and Aeldari. These will have radically different playstyles, per the studio, letting fans lean into what they prefer in battles.

"WARHAMMER 40,000 is a science-fantasy setting without equal," said Game Director, Attila Mohacsi. "Its galactic scale, iconic factions, and brutal battles have contributed to a universe that gels perfectly with Total War’s DNA. We’ve worked with Games Workshop for over 15 years and can’t wait to continue that partnership with the aim of creating the definitive Warhammer 40,000 strategy experience just like we did with the Total War: Warhammer series."

It was also revealed that David Harbour (Stranger Things, Marvel Cinematic Universe), will be playing a character in this entry.

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 does not have a release date yet, but it will be the first Total War title to come out on Xbox and PlayStation consoles instead of simply being a PC release.
