The Butte man who instigated a police chase just to see what it would be like  found out: It cost him $1,000.

John C. Hughes, 55, pleaded guilty Thursday in Butte city court to misdemeanor reckless driving while eluding a peace officer. City Judge Dan Sweeney fined Hughes $1,000.

Sweeney said the county attorney's office recommended only a fine and no jail time because Hughes has no criminal record.

The strange case received national news media attention after Butte law enforcement reported a man purposely got police to chase - because it was something he always wanted to try. The chase started about 3:25 a.m. Thursday in town, and continued onto the interstate at speeds of more than 100 mph. Police used stop sticks to deflate the tires of the man's 2007 Nissan Xterra just west of Rocker before he finally stopped. He was arrested without further incident.

Police said the driver was sober, had no drugs or contraband on him and wasn't wanted by police.

When asked why he started the chase, Hughes said, "I just always wanted to do that," according to the police report.

Aside from all of the obvious stuff (winning the lottery, skimming the perfect stone), we all have that one specific dream that we're desperate to come true.

So, spare a thought for poor John Hughes. No, not that one.

The Montana resident's ultimate ambition was to be in a police chase. Like us, he'd probably watched far too many episodes of America's Wildest Police Chases and thought to himself, "I could do that". So, he went and did it.

But how does one begin a police chase, without actually committing a crime in the first place? Well he started by following a patrol car for seven blocks. He then performed a dramatic u-turn and sped off at 70 mph. Once the chase was in full swing, he cranked up the action by speeding up to 100 mph on the interstate.

Before he knew it, a spike strip had been laid out to flatten his tires and the dream was dead.

When asked why he did it, he responded with "I just always wanted to do that," according to the police report. Fair enough.

Microsoft confirmed June 23, 2026, that its Fairwater campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, is fully operational — and the engineering behind it makes the facility something fundamentally different from every data center that came before it. Where conventional cloud infrastructure racks up general-purpose servers and parcels out workloads to each one independently, Fairwater links hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GB200 Blackwell GPUs into a single, coherent cluster using a two-story building design, 800-gigabit-per-second Ethernet fabric, and a proprietary networking protocol co-developed with OpenAI and NVIDIA. The result, according to Microsoft, is the closest thing to a purpose-built AI supercomputer that any company has ever placed in commercial operation. https://www.techtimes.com/articles/319205/20260627/microsoft-opens-fairwater-wisconsin-ai-campus-runs-one-supercomputer-via-800g-ethernet.htm
