Guidelines on posting from other sites
by Nick H.- 0 replies
- 10.2k views
If you plan on posting news that is from other sources or news sites, please keep the following in mind: 1) Please do not post entire articles from other sources. Most news organizations prohibit copy & pasting of their entire article. It is against the "fair usage" policy set by most news outlets. They expect a paragraph posted, at most, with a link to their article's web page. 2) Make sure that you link to the original article. Not quoting a copied article is against the copyright laws of most countries. 3) When linking to external sources, keep thread and article titles the same. If you have questions, please PM any staff member. Thank you fo…

Silly News Items
by Fred Derf- 0 replies
- 29.6k views
If you see something silly/funny in the news then please consider posting it to Jokes & Funny Stuff rather than here. It is possible that those threads will not be welcome there either but we will deal with that problem if and when we get there. Since tags are currently in effect in J&FS, please add the [News] tag to such posts. We have been noticing too many threads with little to no replies and it seems to be restricting the usefulness of this forum. Please note that the Forum Rules for this section and J&FS have been updated slightly. Thank you for your understanding, Fred

A US family caused a bomb scare at Israel's main international airport after presenting an unexploded artillery shell at a security check. They had picked up the ordnance on a visit to the Israeli occupied Golan Heights, site of wars between Israel and Syria, according to authorities. Video footage on social media showed people running from the scene in panic. The family was allowed to board their flight after being interrogated by security, who gave the all-clear. Hoping to bring the shell back to the US, the family packed it in their return luggage. Video posted on social media by Israel's public broadcasting c…

I would like to note the tragic passing of Australian cricketing legends Rod Marsh 74 and Shane Warne 52, both from sudden heart attacks. Both men were much loved and both Australia along with the global cricket community are in mourning. Truly tragic and I'm shocked to my core.

If these Russian sanctions are supposed to be big and hit hard got a question for everyone. Is FB, Amazon web services, Microsoft and Google going to be allowed to operate in Russia? How are people supposed to get copies of windows sold on new laptops or purchase license keys? Since only 2 phone companies in the world ( Google and Apple ) if you exclude the Harmony OS that is made by Huawei in China only and even in CHina most people are using Google android and Apple iOS. So yea without big tech as amazon is big on webservices, without MS and Apple and other big tech what do you see all happening? Seems like everyone in Russia is still on FB. Since these compa…

A US man has become the first person in the world to get a heart transplant from a genetically-modified pig. David Bennett, 57, is doing well three days after the experimental seven-hour procedure in Baltimore, doctors say. The transplant was considered the last hope of saving Mr Bennett's life, though it is not yet clear what his long-term chances of survival are. "It was either die or do this transplant," Mr Bennett explained a day before the surgery. "I know it's a shot in the dark, but it's my last choice," he said. Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center were granted a special dispensation by th…

Britney Spears speaks out against 'abusive' conservatorship in court https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57586405 Apparently she is the only adult in the US without dementia or in otherwise vegetative state that has conservatorship over her well being. It's mad really. I am just glad we aren't reading how this has driven her to suicide, because there are plenty of celebraties who took their own life over less. 😥

A pilot who crashed a small plane onto railroad tracks was pulled alive from the wreck by a group of Los Angeles Police officers just moments before a commuter train roared through, authorities said. Video of the harrowing rescue shows the officers pulling the bloodied man to safety seconds before the commuter train, blaring its horn, smashed the Cessna 172 into pieces. The plane crashed around 2:10 p.m. Sunday, shortly after takeoff from Whiteman Airport in the San Fernando Valley community of Pacoima, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The timestamp on a police officer’s body camera shows the train smashing the plane at 2:15 p.m. …

Magawa, the famous mine-clearing rat who was awarded a gold medal for his heroism, has died at the age of eight. In a five-year career, the rodent sniffed out over 100 landmines and other explosives in Cambodia. Magawa was the most successful rat trained by the Belgian charity Apopo to alert human handlers about the mines so they can be safely removed. The charity said the African giant pouch rat "passed away peacefully" at the weekend. It said Magawa was in good health and "spent most of last week playing with his usual enthusiasm". But by the weekend "he started to slow down, napping more and showing less interest in food …

In a world where media relies heavily on sponsored content, it's a bit surprising that a major broadcaster in The Netherlands has opted to show a log fire for four hours between 6:30pm and 10:30pm accompanied by Christmas music provided by Sky Radio on the evening of December 25: Source: https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/12/dutch-tv-channel-to-broadcast-log-fire-to-warm-up-christmas/
