Windows Phone 7.8-Time for Microsoft to kill it off.

Recommended Posts

It's time for Microsoft to kill Windows Phone 7.8. If they're going to take this long to do anything or say anything about it, than it's a lost cause. Kill it off, and focus 100% on Windows Phone 8.

For many, they have either A) Upgraded to WP8, or B) Moved to a new platform. Eitherway, this project has to be the worst I've seen come from Redmond in a very long time. There's nothing to it other than a few trinkets heard here and there. No project updates, no release dates, and no feature sets other than the new Start Screen. It's vapoureware plain and simple.

There's simply no reason this couldn't have been delivered to customers shortly after WP8 devices went on sale.

-Dot.

Killing it off wouldn't be a good idea, once people see a pattern of killing support, they simply wont buy the devices, not for the prices they're asking.

They've dropped the ball on a lot of things lately, hopefully they get their act together soon.

I for one surely want 7.8 on my Lumia 800. Will breathe few more months of life in it till the next upgrade. They did however played cruelty card on the WP7.x users and consumers.

I want 7.8 on my Titan II too, but I get my upgrade the end of the month. 7.8 is wasted on this Windows Phone user at this point. I can't help but think who else it's wasted on by this point. All my friends who owned Windows Phones all have WP8 devices now, so it's wasted on them too.

Over reaction much?

I dunno. You think? (Honest question) Personally, I think by this point it's a lost cause, with many already having got their upgrade, or will be getting it soon. Better for Microsoft just to focus on WP8, and getting updates for that out the door on time.

But you are thinking of naught but yourself..

Microsoft aren't making it just for people like us with the ability to upgrade our phones at a whim, they are doing it for people who have the device and are stuck with it, for people who want a lower end/price device and end up with WP7.x (See the Indian market).

So it's a no go for some people, that doesn't make it useless in totalis.

EDIT::

This also means you haven't been coming up to speed with the updates on WP8. Portico is out the door already. It's not being held up for development reasons, they are holding off on it for third party reasons. Not much Microsoft can do about that :\

Still beyond ****ed off that I am waiting for an update that people in the US have, but such is life >.>

It seemed I would never reach a point of agreeing with you Dot, but I've reached that point :).

The way Microsoft handled the Windows Phone 7 end of life is no less than a disappointing fiasco. WP7.8 should have launched alongside Windows Phone 8. What it brings to the table is so small I honestly feel its only true intention was to trick existing WP7 users into thinking they had WP8. Allowing the average consumer to not feel burned when they are seeing all of the Windows Phone 8 adverts in the media.

All of that is lost now since we're many many months past WP8 officially going on sale and still lack a definitive date or road map for this update.

I agree with the assertion that many have probably already upgraded or jumped ship who care about this update. I have already moved to Android for the first time and so have many of my friends, or they are planning to.

Since it brings essentially nothing, but a new Start Screen to WP7 I can't really see the point for the excessive delays, honestly.

I won't be getting a wp8 phone til July. What about me? One of my coworkers loves his 900 in August and is excited for 7.8, what about him? Just because you don't see a use for it doesn't mean a use doesn't exist.

I dunno. You think?

Just a little bit, yeah. And by "little bit", I mean ****ing huge

Personally, I've still got 6 months left before I'm entitled to a free upgrade, and I'm pretty sure there are a **** load of people that got their phone after I did. It is still being sold to this day, right? (lumia 800).

Do I wish they would hurry the **** up? Sure.

Should they all go die in a fire? Probably not.

Should they all go die in a fire? Probably not.

Never said they should die in a fire, but judging by the silence surrounding this update, something sure happened to them. Lol.

So, in your case, you'd have 7.8 for all of a few months before getting your upgrade. Your coworker actually has a case, but sounds as if he is in a tiny minority among WP users.

Microsoft have screwed over Windows Phone 7.x uses that's for sure.

Should they twist the knife a little more and "kill off" 7.8?

NO.

I'm perfectly happy with my Lumia 700 and I have no plans on changing it any time soon. I'm looking forward to 7.8.

Whether MS wants to roll out 7.8 or not, it still ultimately has to go through the carriers. Since carriers like for people to get new phones with service contracts attached, keeping WP7 alive is not in their best interest. So they may have collectively decided to either put insufficient resources toward 7.8 or to kill it altogether.

i am soo ****ed off at ms over the 7.x fiasco, not only does my lumia 900 not get wp8, but 7.8 is a weak update that does not even bring ****ing background voip. the ff camera on my 900 is useless with out voip. ill use my 900 for a few more months, but i have already decided to switch over to android, **** this bull****. at least with android i can load a custom rom and play mkv's nativley.

I have WP7.8 on my Lumia 800. The start screen is a huge improvement. I don't have 7.8 on my HTC HD7 yet, but I can't live without the small tiles now. They're great.

I believe 7.8 is destined to be OTA when it is ultimately released. Whenever that will be.

It has it's place in the low end market.

I never did think about this. I thought for sure WP8 would be able to run on low end devices, and I thought there were a few Nokia?

I don't think 7.8 is all that great of an update. A lot of people were hoping that 7.8 would bring all the features and functionality that are severely lacking in Windows Phone 7, but the update is little more than an updated start screen UI and bluetooth file transfer support. I was really excited for 7.8 until it started being released and I realized it didn't address 95% of the issues I had with my Lumia 900. Microsoft once said that Windows Phone 7 was what Windows Mobile should have been, and then they said that Windows Phone 8 is what Windows Phone 7 should have been. It's just been a terrible journey and a constant letdown for many WP7.x users and I'll never buy another Windows Phone...I won't even consider it. I find it to be a sad little OS lacking a lot of basic functionality. I feel similarly about Windows Phone 8. I could list all my complaints, but thousands of others already have. http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/forums/101801-feature-suggestions That's where everyone's WP7.x hopes and dreams went to die. Microsoft didn't listen to them.

I really wanted to love Windows Phone. I really did.

the reason WP 7.8 shouldn't be canceled is, from how i see it, there are gonna be new WP 7.8 devices being released as the low end WP devices

this has already been proven as mexico and a few other not so high up countries already plan to do this

I don't think 7.8 is all that great of an update.

I think 7.8 is a great update, but could be much better. Really, all I'm missing is background VOIP. Other than that, I'm loving 7.8. There is absolutely no way I could go back to the old start screen.

http://www.wpcentral.com/win-phone-8-usage-rise-according-new-ad-report

67% of WP users are still on 7.5 phones. That 8% 900 users? They've got at least 1.5 years left on their contract. Most of the rest have been released in the last year and a half, which means they have at least a year left on their contract. I see no reason to abandon them.

There's simply no reason this couldn't have been delivered to customers shortly after WP8 devices went on sale.

WP8 devices are not world wide available yet. I'm still here with my WP7 handset, waiting for 7.8 or WP8 devices, witch ever comes first.

    • Ocenaudio 3.19.5 by Razvan Serea Ocenaudio is a full featured, fast and easy to use audio and music editor. It is the ideal software for people who need to edit and analyze audio files without complications. Ocenaudio also has powerful features that will please more advanced users. To assist ocenaudio development, a powerful toolset of audio editing, analysis and manipulation called Ocen Framework was created. ocenaudio is also based on Qt framework, a well known library for cross-platform development. Cross-platform support ocenaudio is available for all major operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Native applications are generated for each platform from a common source, in order to achieve excelent performance and seamless integration with the operating system. All versions of ocenaudio have a uniform set of features and the same graphical interface, so the skills you learn in one platform can be used in the others. VST plugins support Ocenaudio supports VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins, giving its users access to numerous effects. Like the native effects, VST effects can use real-time preview to aide configuration. Real-time preview of effects Applying effects such as EQ, gain and filtering is an important part of audio editing. However, it is very tricky to get the desired result by adjusting the controls configuration alone: you must listen the processed audio. To ease the configuration of audio effects, ocenaudio has a real time preview feature: you hear the processed signal while adjusting the controls. The effect configuration window also includes a miniature view of the selected audio signal. You can navigate on this miniature view in the same way as you do on the main interface, selecting parts that interest you and listening to the effect result in real time. Multiselection for delicate editions To speed up complex audio files editing, ocenaudio includes multi-selection. With this amazing tool, you can simultaneously select different portions of an audio file and listen, edit or even apply an effect to them. For example, if you want to normalize only the excerpts of an interview where the interviewee is talking, just select them and apply the effect. Eficient edition of large files With ocenaudio, there is no limit to the length or the quantity of the audio files you can edit. Using an advanced memory management system, the application keeps your files open without wasting any of your computer's memory. Even in files several hours long, common editing operations such as copy, cut or paste happen almost instantly. Fully featured spectrogram Besides offering an incredible waveform view of your audio files, ocenaudio has a powerful and complete spectrogram view. In this view, you can analyze the spectral content of your audio signal with maximum clarity. Advanced users will be surprised to find that the spectrogram settings are applied in real time. The display is updated immediately when altering features such as the number of frequency bands, window type and size and dynamic range of the display. Ocenaudio 3.19.5 changelog: Fixes crashes related to audio devices on Windows (DirectSound and ASIO) Fixes several crashes and memory corruption issues Fixes opening several headerless files at once, which previously dropped all but one Improves batch export by suggesting and remembering the destination folder Fixes accented and non-Latin characters in VST plug-in and compressed-archive file names Adds zstd compression support and updates the archive library Other bug fixes and improvements Download: Ocenaudio 64-bit | Portable | ~40.0 MB (Freeware) Download: Ocenaudio for Linux and Mac OS View: Ocenaudio Homepage | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
    • I did think about a Echo show once and it would be useful to see what my cameras see. But my brother got one and I changed my mind. Adverts and not really worth the price just to see my cameras. I have a load of dots and a Echo Gen 4, they will do.
    • I asking where you are from or live, because if you don't live in the U.K, why are you so bothered? That is another reason I voted out, E.U and people poking their noses in where they should not be. Sadly we still have it, Trump, and his cronies. Putin as well and no doubt others. It makes no difference what we believe, if we made the right choice or not, we are out. As I said to someone when the news first broke we have voted out, we just need to make the best of it. I have no problems with closer ties to the E.U, we still need to trade. Just don't want to be in their club.
    • So you think I voted out because i am anti-immigrant. I am fed up with those that come over and think that we owe them something. The ones that are at the moment coming over from France where they are already in a safe country because they think and no doubt will get everything chucked at them. While people who were born and bred here get very little. I have nothing against as i have said before those that come here and work. In fact I know full well that our NHS would struggle without them. I do have a problem with those that come over here and try to push their religion and their way of life onto us. My reasons for voting out was because of what the E.U is and is also becoming. I did not agree with Freedom of movement, not because I don't want people over here, but because people need to be checked before being allowed to cross borders and that goes both ways. But my main thing was because the E.U is becoming if not already a united states of Europe. The only reason countries like Poland and Romania joined was because they had no money. When my partner left Poland, she had nothing, Poland had nothing, that is why she left. Wanted to learn something and earn a living. The E.U would have us back according to Michel Barnier. https://www.euronews.com/my-eu...ator-barnier-tells-euronews Why are you so scared to say what country you are in?
    • I wonder what that line really meant...
