THR report that Guillermo del Toro and co-writer Chuck Hogan will write and produce an adaptation of their vampire book trilogy The Strain for FX, with Lost show-runner Carlton Cuse on board as executive producer.

The novels revolve around a vampire virus that infects New York, and the Doctor who investigates. The story treats these Vampires more as parasitic creatures than the brooding monsters of myth, and drops all of the romanticism that tends to be associated with them. It's an interesting take and might well make for a great tv show.

The first book, The Strain, was published in 2009, and was followed by 2010's The Fall and the final installment, 2011's The Night Eternal. The Strain was also adapted into a comic series by writer David Lapham and artist Mike Huddleston for Dark Horse. The 8th issue of which is out now.

During the course of their conversation, del Toro revealed that once he turns in the finished cut of Pacific Rim next July, he?s going begin production on the pilot for The Strain, which he?ll direct. The filmmaker gave an update on where exactly the project is right now:

?Well Chuck Hogan and I are gonna write the pilot together, and we?re starting already to cast. In other words, we?re out to actors with the books and me meeting them and we?re starting to, with a little bit of luck, get a very interesting cast for the series. The pilot has been greenlit, which means that it?s not an ?if? but a ?when,? we?re gonna shoot it next year. It will shoot very likely in Toronto.?

Del Toro also talked a bit more about the series in an interview with MTV, where he revealed that he hopes to have the show on the air in 2014 should FX spark to their pilot and order it to series. The director also talked about the look and feel of the TV series adaptation:

?Basically I?m trying to do what I do in my movies which is to show it as a reality, but as a reality that is stylized. It?s not like CSI or The Wire, it?s real but it feels a little stylized. But the way the camera work will be is very realistic. We want to keep the camera very documentary even if the look of the show is not. The look of the show is very designed. The style of the camera and the storytelling will be very loose. It will evolve from that feel of reality, and little by little we want to evolve into more stylish, horror feel that requires smoother camera moves, more suspense and atmosphere-driven moments so it will be a mixture. I don?t think that mixture has been seen a lot on TV.?

The innovative filmmaker also discussed the level of gore that will be on display given that it?s a horror series on cable television:

?Well it will certainly be brutal. We are a TV show, we are restrained about how much human gore we can show, but we will be pretty brutal. If you read the novels and you read the comic, there are very, very harrowing human dynamics in the 3 books. Because the vampires in the books, the first people they want to kill are the people they love, so that?s gonna be pretty hardcore [laughs].?

Deadline reports that Corey Stoll has signed up as lead character 'Dr. Ephraim Goodweather' in FX's upcoming pilot, The Strain. It's based on the vampire novel trilogy and Dark Horse comic book series written by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro. The latter will direct the pilot based on a script written by him and Hogan. TV veteran Carlton Cuse (Lost) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. According to the site, "The project already has a full writing staff in place churning out scripts, and I hear FX has committed $500,000 to creature creation." The Pacific Rim helmer will be spending a lot of time with small screen projects it seems as it was yesterday revealed that he's working on an adaptation of Japanese manga Monster. "To me, having the right lead for The Strain series was perhaps the most important creative task," del Toro told the site. "To be able to secure the perfect actor in Corey Stoll sets the project on the right track. To embody a character like Ephraim Goodweather ? who transitions through every emotion and situation imaginable, and which anchors the narrative of the series ? requires amazing talent and craft. Corey has both in spades as he has demonstrated it over and over again."

Deadline reports that Mia Maestro has joined the cast of The Strain as, "Dr. Nora Martinez, who works so closely with Ephraim Goodweather, they finish each other?s sentences and stumble into an affair. A brilliant biochemist, Martinez cares more about people than the diseases that threaten them, but she will soon be forced to embrace a new identity as a ruthless warrior." The actress-singer is perhaps best known for starring in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, but is no stranger to television after roles in the likes of Person of Interest and White Collar. She will star opposite Corey Stoll as 'Dr. Ephraim Goodweather'. The series - which is based on Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan's vampire novel trilogy - has a pilot order (which will be helmed by the Pacific Rim director) but is being eyed for a full 13-episode pickup according to the site.

John Hurt has joined the cast of The Strain, the upcoming FX pilot based on the vampire novel trilogy by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. The 73-year-old British actor, who previously worked with del Toro on 2004?s Hellboy, will play holocaust survivor and professor Abraham Setrakian.

?I am incredibly happy to be reunited with John, who is one of the greatest actors in the world and one of my favorite people ever,? del Toro, who is set to direct and co-write the pilot, said in a statement. ?Chuck and I always visualized him while writing The Strain novels and he is absolutely perfect for the part!?

While Hurt is best known for his Oscar-nominated performances in The Elephant Man and Midnight Express, he?s no stranger to television, starring in the BBC?s Alan Clark Diaries and HBO?s Recount.

Production on The Strain pilot begins in September.

The Strain is a 2009 vampire horror novel which was written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. This was followed by The Fall and The Night Eternal. While it was originally envisioned as a television series, del Toro's inability to find a buyer led him to adapting it into this trilogy of novels and later a Dark Horse graphic novel. Well, work is now finally moving ahead on a small screen adaptation, with the Pacific Rim helmer set to direct the first episode. Talking at the TCA press tour this week, FX CEO John Landgraf was asked how graphic the show will be. "It?s pretty graphic. It?s a horror show. I think you can expect content commensurate with The Walking Dead or American Horror Story." As for how the network is planning on adapting the trilogy, he make it clear that they have a very clear plan in mind and have already set out a specific number of episodes in order to faithfully adapt the story and NOT drag it out unnecessarily. "It?s a trilogy, and the trilogy ends the story. It?s a truly epic story. And when Guillermo [del Toro] came in to sell it, one of the things they made clear is that they wanted to tell the story of the books. That story would be told over three, four or five seasons. They have work to do, in terms of figuring out how they are going to resituate that story, in an episodic television series, but it will be somewhere between 39 and 65 episodes. No less and no more, and I?m really excited about that." Del Toro has so far assembled an impressive cast which includes Corey Stoll, John Hurt, Kevin Durand, M?a Maestro, Sean Astin, Robert Maillet and Doug Jones. It's believed that the first season has already been picked up for a 13-episode run.

According to TVLine, Hope bears the largely non-descriptive character identity of Joan Luss, one of the few initial survivors of the outbreak. Presumably, her character would receive more spotlight in subsequent episodes, as the role is identified to be recurring.

Based on Del Toro?s 2009 novel trilogy, ?The Strain? follows Dr. Ephraim ?Eph? Goodweather (?House of Cards? star Corey Stoll), a CDC operative who investigates a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

The Guillermo del Toro FX vampire drama ?The Strain? pulled a fast one on us earlier in the week with its subtle teaser trailers, but it?s now playing on the level after being greenlit to series. Casting continues, as ?Southland? star Regina King has joined the production in an important recurring role, but will she catch ?The Strain??

According to Deadline, King will take the role of Ruby Wain, the smart and accomplished manager of philandering rock star Gabriel Bolivar, as played by Jack Kesy. Following the cancellation of TNT?s acclaimed ?Southland,? King has been known to recur on ?The Big Bang Theory? as a university human resources counselor.

FX?s adaptation will see a run of 13 episodes beginning in July 2014.

Also present among the cast are Sean Astin (?Lord of the Rings?), Roger Cross (?24?), Leslie Hope, Robert Maillet (?Pacific Rim?), Mia Maestro (?Alias?), Lauren Lee Smith, Miguel Gomez, Kevin Durand (?LOST?), David Bradley (?Game of Thrones,? replacing John Hurt) and Richard Sammel (?Inglorious Basterds?). Former ?LOST? and current ?Bates Motel? showrunner Carlton Cuse will helm FX?s adaptation from a screenplay by del Toro and novel co-writer Michael Hogan.

    • Hi everyone, I'm planning a small network upgrade and was wondering how others prepare their networks for future needs. Do you usually invest in higher-speed switches and better cabling from the start, or do you upgrade only when necessary? I'd be interested in hearing what has worked well for you and any lessons you've learned over time. Thanks!
