Samsung mocks iPhone 5 with new "waiting in line" ads

In a now-familiar marketing tactic, the company is satirizing Apple fanboys as clueless sheep. The ad above, set in front of Apple-like stores in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, presents such diehards as easily impressed (?The headphone jack is going to be on the bottom!?), dumb (?I heard the connector is going to be all digital. What does that even mean??) and entitled (?All I?m saying is that they should have a priority line for people who?ve waited five times??)

The ad also calls out Apple?s controversial Lightning connector: ?I heard you have to have an adapter to use the dock on the new one,? someone complains. ?Yeah yeah, but they make the coolest adapters.?

As usual, the consumers who buy the Galaxy S III are presented as secure people who think for themselves. One such buyer is also shown waiting in line, but he?s holding a spot for someone else. Who? His parents. Ouch.

It's even funnier how most answered "iPhone (5)" when Samsung Mobile USA asked about people's smartphone of choice on their own Facebook page. Hilarious!

eh about as funny as the Pepsi and Coke facebook pages with people posting "you drink this crap?!" and "soda kills you!" to everything the companies post...

As an iPhone owner every year and a person who stood in line last year for one and will again tomorrow morning at 6am.. I find this commercial GREAT!! Love it and very smart by Samsung. Honestly if this is shown on primetime TV some people will choose the S3 over the iPhone 5.

Is the Galaxy S3 really good? I have an iPhone 4 and my upgrade is in march. For me it's between the iPhone 5 and galaxy s3 or 4 if its out. Something about the S3 gets my attention.

It's an amazing phone.. I still prefer Galaxy Nexus because I love pure Android but Galaxy S3 is definitely the best and most feature packed smartphone on the market and it will get Jelly Bean shortly as well so all the benefits of Google Now and other cool stuff will make it even better. It's super thin, battery lasts long, very fast and display is simply breathtaking.

My friend flashed his GS3 with Jelly Bean "SuperNexus" ROM, and its fantastic.

Ha. They are funny, but yeah, I find it hard to support the "directly attacking" adverts. Just make a superior product and keep it classy, that's how you build a loyal customer base.

Yes, its really good. Probably the best out there currently. The Samsung Ativ S, which is basically S3 (if not a little better) with Windows Phone 8 is also coming out. That should be an alternative as well.

Um, Apple is famous for direct slander ads. Remember the "Get a Mac" (Mac vs. PC ads)?

What's your point? He didn't said he approved Apple's Mac vs PC commercials.

I think these slander ads are incredibly lame as well. Good commercials show the actual product, not bash the competition's. I do admit I laughed my ass of when Apple aired their Mac vs PC commercial "Choose a Vista".

Many on this forum will disagree with me but you probably won't like Android as much as you do iOS. I'd stick with the iPhone in your shoes.

    • Linux 7.2's first release candidate gets off to a good start by Paul Hill Credit: Larry Ewing It has been a few weeks since the release of Linux 7.1, and in that time, the Linux 7.2 merge window has been open, where developers can submit their features and patches ready for the upcoming release. That window is now shut, and the release candidate phase has begun so that new features can be tested and further fixes applied. According to the founder of Linux, Linus Torvalds, this week’s release candidate looks “reasonably normal”. Although we are super early in the release candidates, this is a good sign as it makes it more likely that an eighth release candidate will not be needed. Torvalds even mentioned that the update’s stats are only larger than they really are because there was another AMD header drop with a third of the patch just being AMD GPU register definitions, which aren’t big changes but make the code contributed look larger overall. In addition to this, he noted that just over half the patch is drivers, even when excluding the AMD register dump. The rest of the changes are spread out over architecture updates, tooling, documentation, and core kernel updates. In the next week, Torvalds says that he will be chilling out, taking the week “mostly off”. Despite this, he will be reading emails and keeping up with things, so if he is slow responding, now you know why. He said he is hoping for a calm week, but we will just have to see if the second release candidate is actually like that. We should expect seven or eight release candidates before Linux 7.2 is released, so expect it around the end of August. If you missed it a few weeks ago, be sure to check out our coverage of Linux 7.1's release.
