Fable 2 Preview (Xbox 360)

By: C?sar A. Berardini - "Cesar"

October 6th, 2006>

X06 wasn?t all about terror, aberration and gore. Although I?ll remember this X0 for all that, this prolific event saw also some of the most brilliant story tellers sharing their vision for next-generation gaming, with Peter Jackson at the top of a group that promises to revolutionize gaming and storytelling using the Xbox platform. If you missed that Future of Storytelling panel, head over to this page to watch the whole session.

One of those brilliant minds is Peter Molyneux, a game designer that entered the Hall of Fame of Gaming when he gave birth to the god games with the creation of Populous. Almost twenty years later, he finds himself working for Microsoft Game Studios, after the software giant decided to acquire Guildford-based Lionhead Studios and its satellites.

At last week?s X06, we had the chance to learn more about Fable 2: the sequel to 2004?s ground-breaking role-playing adventure game for the Xbox. We also l04?s ground-breaking role-playing adventure game for the Xbox. We also learned a few tidbits about the ?super secret? feature.

The first new feature that Peter Molyneux discussed was ?dynamic levels?. It happened that at one point during the development of Fable, Molyneux promised that you could plant an acorn and see it growing into an oak tree, but unfortunately, that feature was cut from Fable. Because of that, Molyneux received death threats from anonymous Fable fans.

For Fable 2, that and much more will finally happen in the game. But forget about acorns turning into oak trees; let?s talk about chaBrightwoods.

Brightwood

This is one of the regions in Fable 2. Over the course of the game, this region will change, and those changes will depend on how you play Fable 2.

A camp could turn into a village in a decade, and in another ten years time there will be a town in there. Or, if you destroy the camp, there won?t be an evolving settlement in there, so nature will take over that area.

The whole example of acorns turning into oak trees has evolved, and this it will certainly be part of the final game; making Peter happy for the fact that he won?t receive any more death threats?

Another new feature found in Fable 2 is ownership. Peter explained that this is such a simple concept, but for some reason we have played so many role playing games for countless years in castles, towns, villages, dungeons but they were just scenarios that you could only step in, but never own. ?It is about time that you can own those places? emphasized Molyneux, with all the implications that may have.

Ultimately, if you play long enough, you can own everything you see in the world of Fable 2.

The Characters

Once again, Peter promises that story and characters will also be next-generation in Fable 2. Molyneux feel that with Fable, Lionhead Studios pioneered morphing and for that matter Fable 2 will have to accomplish more than that to surprise you because morphing into good or evil won?t be enough.

One new concept is wealth; in Fable 2 you can also become rich or poor independently from what path of integrity you choose. You can be a good but poor hero, or an evil rich ******, but things really get interesting when we talk about other, more rare combinations that are related to cruelty and kindness.

Molyneux also highlighted that, at the start of the game, you?ll have to choose your character?s gender. He also let slip that there will be an advanced form of customization as every hero will be unique, and whether you choose to spend more time in the mirror or not it?ll be up to you.

Hopefully it's at least what the original Fable was supposed to be.

well all I know is that I have not played a RPG since A Link to the Past on super nes...and fable: the lost chapters for the PC got me to play all the way through the game... so i know it was in depth as some RPGs can get.. but as long as Fable 2 can match what Fable did.. ill be happy

If any game can make me want to fast foward a bit and buy an Xbox 360 it's this. It looks and sounds incredible.

But they did say Fable 1 would have a lot of things that were cut before we all got our hands on it. Hopefully that doesn't happen here.

well there were similar promises in the 1st game, even one where you the hero would die of old age and you would pick the quest up from one of your kids that youd have with some lady you meet. Forest were meant to grow, trees die and new ones form. ALot and ALOT of features got canned and were overhyped. Hopefully this isnt the case again but I'd hold my breath on a few.

Fable was ok but not brilliant, extremly confined and linear too. that said Fable 2 is on my shortlist of games to get.

i love attention to detail just as much as the next guy but i for one am not upset if developers need to cut things from games if they include such things as a tree dying and regrowing... the character death and starting over sounds good but wouldnt it just be playing the same game over??... anyway this game is a must have for me.. i will continue to follow its development

Ohh me neither, just pointing out that the original had some similar lofty promises that werent met.

WACUP 1.99.51.24568 Preview changelog: Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when doing some of the drag + drop actions within the media library window Fixed a loading crash seen related to a problem with some of the artwork cache image files being restored which should now be better handled allowing for the bad image to be removed without it failing Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when the internal metadata cache clearing is triggered which could block the main ui thread for too long with this now being moved to a background thread Fixed some performance issues with some of the methods related to determining artwork support which mainly affected the local library import / refresh (this is still slower for some compared to other players because there's more data & artwork aspects being checked for which means doing more processing on a single file despite the best of attempts to reduce duplicate / heavy processing where possible) Fixed a crash with the JTFE based missing files hotkey which no one seems to have used for an age for this to appear (maybe it's time to seriously consider stripping out features that aren't being used) Fixed how some of the file types which use extra information to reference their sub-songs is handled which was preventing some from being correctly resolved back to their base file (noticed fixing above) Fixed an issue with the handling of files with underscores in their filepath which wasn't being correctly handled causing some of the filename to be lost when shown as the title if title reading is delayed Fixed a few things that might be behind NotSoDirect not being stable for some setups though am still not certain that the changes done for this are going to fully resolve the problem from the crash reports Fixed the OS toast handling when there's no prior shortcut in the OS start menu to now create the shortcut (needed to allow the yes/no buttons for the new build / post-release toast) to be done as a hidden one so it's less likely to cause annoyance for those not wanting to see it whilst still allowing this less than ideal OS api implementation requirement to be met to avoid toasts without the needed buttons Fixed a regression when moving from taglib1 to taglib2 which broke some of the handling in place to allow for external programs to still access files when wacup has a held open cached instance of the file Everything else Updated cppwinrt (gen_win10shell.dll) to 3.0.260520.1 (26 May 2026) Updated libcurl (libcurl.dll) to 8.2.1 (24 Jun 2026) Updated Monkey's Audio (in_ape.dll) to 13.15 (28 Jun 2026) Updated mpg123 (mpg123.dll) to 1.33.6 (6 Jun 2026) Updated OpenSSL (libcurl.dll) to 3.5.7 (9 Jun 2026) Updated pugixml to 1.16 (16 Jun 2026) Updated taglib (tag2.dll) to 2.3.0 (11 May 2026) Updated vgmstream (in_vgmstream.dll) to the latest Git commit from 28 Jun 2026 Download: WACUP 64-bit | 9.6 MB (Freeware) Download: WACUP 32-bit View: WACUP Website | Screenshots Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
