Entire Nvidia G84 and G86 series faulty?

The Inquirer is reporting that recent admissions by Nvidia of some chipsets failing is quite an understatement.

Their sources are saying the entire G84 and G86 series are affected, a popular video chipset on recent Dell, HP, ASUS and Mac laptops (including mine).

So in other words, just about every single Nvidia mobile chip produced over the last two to three years are faulty? :pinch:

That leaves ATI's chips as the last choice for a decent dedicated graphics solution.

Yikes! That really sucks if it turns out to be true.

Here's the breakdown...

G84:

  • Quadro FX 1700
  • 8700M GT *
  • 8600M GS *
  • 8600M GT *
  • 8600 GTS
  • 8600 GT

G86:

  • 8400 GS
  • 8400M G *
  • 8400M GS *
  • 8400M GT *
  • 8500 GT

* = notebook GPU

It's all purely speculation, don't go running to the hills yet. Besides, don't most of you toss out perfectly good graphics cards every 12 months anyways?

Well, not every one of us chuck out laptops every 12 months. :p

It's no big deal if it were desktop cards - just throw on a new cooler and apply some quality thermal paste. Or RMA the card. But how do you fix overheating problems on GPUs in laptops without considering an entirely new laptop altogether?

What specific desktop card series is affected by this?

The G84 and G86 are the 8600(g84) series and the 8400/8500(g86) series.

Edit: Anaron beat me to it

And Since this applies to desktop parts as well, according to the article, does that mean i should have to worry about my own 8600gt dying earlier than it should?

Yikes! That really sucks if it turns out to be true.

Here's the breakdown...

G84:

  • Quadro FX 1700
  • 8700M GT *
  • 8600M GS *
  • 8600M GT *
  • 8600 GTS
  • 8600 GT

G86:

  • 8400 GS
  • 8400M G *
  • 8400M GS *
  • 8400M GT *
  • 8500 GT

* = notebook GPU

 OMG and I was going to buy a 8600GT for my media center. Not anymore!

I hate to say anything for fear of jinxing myself, but I have a quadro nvs 140m in my laptop, have overclocked it with rivatuner, and I haven't encountered a single problem thus far.

That said, if anything *does* happen, I'm fairly certain there will be lawsuits aplenty if the only solution Nvidia offers is a driver update that makes the fan run more often. For laptop users, a faster running fan is just not an option, since battery life will be greatly effected.

Ah crap I sold one of my Laptops a HP DV9644CA with a 8600M GT. I was using it in a cool environment so no problems. The guy I sold it to started complaining of blue screens and reboots when playing games. Hereos of Might and Magic 4, Far Cry and such. It had xp and thought possibly the drivers from notebookreview was messing with the fan. Loaded up the vista install all was fine for a month now hes getting gpu problems alot more.

    • Autonomous post-training loop placed 8th of 4,000 and then rewrote its own evaluation strategy. An autonomous AI system built by researchers at Amazon's A-EVO-Lab completed a full post-training run on a 30 billion parameter NVIDIA Nemotron model — with no human in the loop, across four rounds running over multiple weeks — and then did something its designers had not planned for: it detected that its own internal evaluation metric had become misleading and redesigned the search strategy it was using to improve itself. https://www.techtimes.com/articles/319123/20260626/nvidia-ai-trained-itself-30b-model-corrected-its-own-broken-metric-mid-run.htm

    • If Ford would stop hiring SUITS to run the company, and put CAR GUYS back in charge perhaps they could do better. Heck, the only CAR they produce today is the Mustang. Hey Ford! Not everyone needs/wants an overpriced SUV or pickup truck that is so tall you have to have a step ladder to get in and out of it.
    • Amazing how some will just jump all over something. Probably the same people that thought Musk was a "tech god" before he saddled up with "bad orange man". Before, they worshiped at his feet, including a lot of so called hollywood types. Now, because he fell off the plantation truck, they toss him under the bus.
