Firefox and certain sites

Hey all.

Today I was curious to why exactly Firefox is extremely slow and stops when loading certain pages. I never thought of trying to load the pages in IE to see if the fault was all Firefox's and so I just did this. IE loads the pages just fine! Therefore, what is the problem with it?

Most pages load fine, but the ones that don't include Wired, Facebook and other social networking sites, and random pages from my university's site. Do any of you know what this is happening? I really don't want to resort to using IE again as I've really fallen in love with Firefox.

I've tried clearing all the private date, clearing other crap using CCleaner and reinstalling. What can I do?

is it some specific subsite on wired.com?

I just cleared my cache, and 60 requests, 260KB loads in 2.14 seconds. And that is going through a ssh tunnel -- which is for sure a hit on the performance.

You could grab something like firebug to see where its hanging at, it can report the load times of every single item on the page, etc. But I do not have any issue with wired or facebook using firefox 3.01 with logs of addons loaded.

Hmm, I'll see if others are having the same problem if I search around Google. And no, it's no subsite of Wired, just the main site. Maybe my laptop needs a reboot, it's been running slow recently and I love having a fresh system.

part of the problem with some of the sites has to do with how they are coded. IE allows for sloppy coding and will fill in the errors on a page. Firefox on the other hand is much more stringent on how it reads the code, and requires it to be coded properly. so for the sites that i go to that don't like to load in Firefox i use "IE TAB" an add on for Firefox and it then load the page up as if it where loaded in IE

I would really suggest you grab firebug for firefox.. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843

Or something like say httpfox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6647

Addons like these will give you the tools you need to find out what is hanging up.

What other addons are you using -- does it do it if you launch in safe mode.. Ie no addons added? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

Are you running this on vista or xp? Do you have IPv6 enabled or disabled -- have you told firefox not to use IPv6? etc.. etc..

I'm only using the Roboform addon for my passwords. Yes, it still happens in Safe Mode. I'm running XP SP3. Dunno if I have IPv6 enabled or not, I'll have gander soon and see if it makes any difference.

Unless you installed it, xp does not out of the box have IPv6 support -- vista does.

So if your on xp, I doubt that is your problem.

Take a look to see what is holding up the loading of these pages, is it related to looking up other domains? javascript, java, etc.. etc. once you know what is slowing up the load of the page we can figure out the root cause and fix it.

But just saying certain sites load slow is not really much info to work with.

Strange... when using this firebug thing and looking at the loading times for each part of the pages, the pages load much quicker...

If you're unsure of how to use it, show us a screenshot of it, and I'm sure somebody will gladly point you in the right direction :)

I'd suggest opening firebug, then clicking the Console button. from there enable Script & Net. This will track what you connect to and how long it takes.
