Rebecca Vitsum told CNN anchor she was atheist during live interview

Behind her were ruins, a tangled mess where structures once stood. Cradled in her arms, the mother's 19-month-old son played with a snatched microphone, unfazed by the chaos swirling around him. And in front of Rebecca Vitsmun stood CNN's Wolf Blitzer, who -- after asking her about the decision that saved her and her son's lives -- had one more question:

Please someone tell me how this is newsworthy?

Someone please tell me why American new services invoke god every chance they get. If I didn't know better I'd think they were run by religious institutions.

It's newsworthy because you have a news presenter awkwardly forcing religion into a completely unrelated discussion and you have a woman brave enough to stand up for her beliefs on mainstream television. It shouldn't be newsworthy but it actually is.

Link doesn't work.

Mate, I do reckon you're totally awesome, and that's being carved in stone now that you've shown about your new full HD pocket-telly there, but still... that completely useless image takes like ten thousand of my screens, let's have some sense of scale here!

As an Aussie it is so awkward watching American news. If you are a journalist here and asked people about god after a disaster you'd be roundly ridiculed and criticised.

I respect this woman for being brave enough to declare herself an atheist in front of all of the U.S.

I agree with this I am from the UK and hear often from them about how WE have a religious state due to being officially religious and how America is officially secular, but reality is there are more religious faithful in America than the UK and being an Atheist isn't notable from what I hear it can loose you friends in America.

As for the women good on her for sticking to her principles. I am just sorry that she felt she had to qualify her statement with ""We are here, and you know, I don't blame anybody for thanking the Lord," I would not have attempted to qualfify my point of view with such an appeasement. I do blame people for thanking "The Lord" (sorry which Lord, Allah, FSM. The Force, Church of Google?). However given the context of it all I can understand she might not want to make a big deal out of it with her smashed to bits house behind her and all that.

I think what has got up my nose the most was that he even attempted to invoke religion into a news story is this normal in America in the UK (again for America readers of this post a land officially religious with very few religious people going to church and stuff) wouldn't be brought up. The laughing from the reporter lets assume it wasn't anti atheist prejudice and just being caught out he found funny. Not trying to troll but I hear so many Americans tell me about how Britain is the religious nation YES WE ARE ON PAPER ONLY America seems to make being an Atheist or non Christian a BIG ISSUE in life. It says something that this is even a story, if anything its not about Atheism it's just a news reporter asking a stupid question, and being a fool. No one would dare assume such a thing here you might as well be asking if she liked his taste in music.... Odd just odd....

God must be a sadist. First he sends massive tornados to kill people, then in a split second tells them to run.

My personal view?

They are all idiots.

She ran to protect herself and her child. "The Lord" had nothing to do with it.
