Microsoft is rumored to be increasing the build to build release speed, what do you think?

I voted for:

  • Ludicrous speed
  • Weekly builds
  • Yes, I'm ok with buggy builds. The more users get to test new features the sooner the bugs can be found and fixed.

Yeah....what was the point of the fast channel if they were not going to release anything until it was fairly polished?  I was thinking that it'd be more along the lines of Firefox Nightly or Chrome Canary, unstable, stuff comes and goes constantly, updated constantly.  Not only that but the "slow" lane gets the same build a few days later, just with a patch or two and some workarounds posted. What's the point?

Definitely wouldn't mind some Weekly builds. I generally run it on bare metal so daily would be a bit much... then again nobody says I have to update daily.

Ring the alarm, someone open the firehouse!

I think having daily builds would be too much, what you spend an hour or so installing each build, so by the time you get around to playing with it a new one comes out. Maybe twice a week or so would be better.

True but I think daily is still too much people will be left behind on updating and it would become extremely fragmented. People would be questioning why a feature is not fixed, when it turns out that it was already updated in another build. Also downloading gigs of data daily would be too much.

I would be happy with 2 builds a month.

My download speed is only 2Mb/s so it takes a while downloading the bits every time :)

For me two builds a month is too slow, as it means that they will be choosing very carefully which ones to release, if it were weekly they would have to push one out no matter the status, and they could not/should not delay as much.

  • 2 weeks later...

I wish they'd add a binary patch system to Windows so new  builds wouldn't need to be deployed via an image which has 50-80% same binary content as the old one. Just update the binaries that have changed and do a refresh in place. WinSxs is already setup to do that, they don't need to do a full reinstall.

Totally agree, for people with limited speed or BW downloading a full image is a PITA.

Weekly builds for fast ring sounds just perfect. 1 week testing is enough to report bugs quickly.

But god!! That aweful inconsistent UI. When is that going to be fixed? Mabe till Windows 18.
