Sony now Calls the PS Vita a

So their only real active gaming platforms are now the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation TV, I believe.

Wouldn't disagree. Best handheld I've ever owned from a design/technical point of view, but unless you like indie titles, RPGs and visual novels you're SOL.

Luckily I do like rpgs, indies and danganronpa got me into visual novels.

Apparently this was a misquote for what its worth

I can't imagine they will do a follow up to the Vita. It didn't even fare well in the home town of Japan. The DS smoked it there. Though I find the Vita night and day a better handheld than the DS.

Extra Credits had a good summary of reasons why the vita failed last year.

They didn't knock it's abilities either. They rather liked it.

Out of the people I knew that had older PSPs none upgraded to this. A shame when it looked like a good console. But alas I bought a new 3DS XL last week. There was just no contest.

Correct, but even the PSP's support was lackluster until Monster Hunter launched. But right now there is no contest indeed, the new 3DS is just better handheld experience in every way now.

Always the biggest complaints usually surround great hardware, everything else...

Wouldn't disagree. Although the prices of memory cards are outrageous.

All of that assumes games need to have AAA visuals to be successful and for the Vita to be successful as a result. Which is obviously not the case. Indies have given the Vita a second wind, which is not going to satisfy everyone obviously or make the money AAAs do. However, most of the bigger indie names are continually porting to the system, which proves it's enough for even minimal success.

If Sony redirect their attention and funding in the same area, it could make another small comeback for more owners. Most likely never matching 3DS or PSP numbers, but certainly some increase.

Vita's proprietary memory cards are the exact reason I didn't bother getting one. I'm tired of being put over a barrel for things like that. Not being much of a gamer anymore also had a lot to do with it.

You can't buy a Vita on the Sony store....

I said it long ago -- Sony should've pushed out a $600 PS4/Vita bundle, with at least two games that can feature cross-play.  And that's at launch.  Now it should be $550 with multiple games for both systems and a PS+ subscription.

For better or worse I think they're more interested in taking a small loss on the PS4 and Morpheus bundle. For now it's all about staying in the black based off of standalone PS4s selling at a profit.

It's an interesting and compelling argument.

I like my Vita, but I don't have a lot of reasons to start her up any more. Well, beyond updating the console, that is.

They are now.  But 18 months ago, a $599 PS4/Vita bundle pretty much would've been close enough, and you put it in people's mind's that they work together.

Currently you can get a PS4 with The Last of Us (and over X-Mas another game as well).  They already bundle Borderlands 2 with a Vita for $200.  Bundle for $550 an extra indie title that is cross-play or something like Destiny that is playable through Vita, and you can push units.

But as it stands, it's dead in the water.

My guess is that Vita will still outsell Morpheus.

Probably will. My guess for morpheus would start around 15m and go to maybe 40m very top end if VR becomes "hip". Until it's issued as a standard, if it ever is going forward, it's not going above 50% of the install base. Sony do have the pricing advantage going into the VR race, so if VR catches on well enough I don't see why tens of millions of units would be completely unrealistic. Price needs to be <= $199 to start though.
