Microsoft vs Non Microsoft Applications

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm not quite sure if this is where I should post this topic but after today I started wondering how much of you prefer non microsoft products and how much of you prefer microsoft products?

Also post which programs do you use for common things like:

Sending/Receiving e-mails

Web Browsing

Playing Mp3s

Watching Video/DVD

Instant Messaging

(I can't think anything else right now, but if you do, post it) :)

Well, for firsts, there is no office suite that its better than the MS one, the spell shchecking engine is better and more rich for example.

Browser: Firefox

Playing mp3: winamp 5

Watching video dvd: vlc player

IM: messenger 6 (but soon its going to be miranda or gaim once a new version is released)

Yep even OppenOffice which Linux use as an Office Suite isn't as good as MS Office

if you said that as sarcasm then let me say that Im not talking blindly, I used Oppenoffice a lot in windows and the time I used fedora, it feels just too uncomfortable

So I guess I prefer non-MS stuff. Not because MS stuff is bad, but because I believe the other stuff is better.

Sending/Receiving e-mails: Thunderbird

Web Browsing: Firefox

Playing Mp3s: Media Player Classic

Watching Video/DVD: Cyberlink PowerDVD

Instant Messaging: MSN Messenger 6/Windows Messenger5/PSI (Jabber Client)

Edit:

PS I use OpenOffice

I used to have openoffice for a while now I got a free version of StarOffice 7 but I would like those two to make that step that they miss to really compete with MS Office.

How come you have a non-microsoft product for Instant Messaging for the PC but you 've got a Microsoft product for the same reason on a MAC??

Trillian isn't compatible with Macintosh?

  • E-mail Client - Hotmail. I know it's horrendously insecure; no idea why I use it.
  • Word Processing - Microsoft Word 2002
  • Web Browser - Netscape 7.1
  • MP3 Player - iTunes
  • DVD Player - WinDVD
  • Instant Messenger - MSN Messenger. I used to use ICQ, but all my mates use MSN Messenger now, so I switched.

I love all of these products/services except Hotmail. I'm not keen on anything that comes from Microsoft, other than Office and MSN Messenger,

Nop! MyIE is much more better than IE, and it would be shame to make these too equal!

Sending/Receiving e-mails - hotmail

Web Browsing - IE6

Playing Mp3s - itunes 4.2 windows ver.

DVD - cyberlink powerdvd

Watching Video - windows media player

Instant Messaging - msn messenger 6.1
