CD-R Exploded In My LiteOn Drive!

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I was running Knoppix 3.8.1 off the CD I just burnt when I heard a damn loud sound. I looked around and nothing dropped or anything like that. Then I heard some weird sounds from my drive, and my Knoppix system hanged. I turned off the computer, open my drive, and this is what I saw.

Damn. My question is, is it the drive at fault? Or is it the CD-R? I don't know whether to laugh or be shocked. Sigh.

I see it at least once a month at my shop. It's usually caused by cracked CDs, especially when they were cheap CDs to begin with. (such as ones found in cereal boxes)

95% of the time, I just take the drive apart, remove all the pieces and put it back together and it works fine.

Yep. There's a good chance that none of the internals were harmed when it shattered. Just remove the screws, take the cover off, and clean it out. If you have a laser lens cleaner, use that afterwards.

I have that exact same drive. That's never happened to me though. I saw a "Mythbusters" once where they were trying to see if exploding CDs were a myth or not. They couldn't get one to explode until they put a cd in the microwave for 10 minutes and then spun it on a high rpm power drill. Their conclusion was that it was a myth that that would never happen in your computer, I guess they were totally wrong!

I remember that one  Guess they didn't use cheap CDs. They were spinning them at like 10,000 RPMs or something too (way faster than a normal CD drive).

I dismantled the drive, and here are some pictures:

Probably get a vacuum cleaner or something to clean things out, before trying to put it back together. Or maybe I'll just throw the thing away =(. Going to sleep now, 2.36am =P.

I've heard using a vacuum cleaner around fragile electronics is not the best idea because it creates static electricity. Go to Wal-Mart or whatever you have nearby and pick up a can of compressed air.

And yea, a CD moving at 52x causes LOTS of stress on the disk.

wholey crap... I have the same drive... the 48x was fncked up so I bought the new one and it's the exact same thing.. cept the face is black... but not for my computer.. bought it to put in my sister's computer... I fear it's going to blow up like that base on how fast it spins the CD... now that fear is confirmed...

BTW, are you female... who's leg is in the picture? :ninja: :shifty:

i have x48 and all my cdr are the super cheap once. out of a bunch of 100 i sometimes get one that is clearly messed up.

i go through them at a rate of 100 per month easily (just new dj mixes for the car and such)

anyway - never happened too me. i guess i will not get a faster drive as i see no point. just more rsk cd will explode

DeepBlade: I was running Knoppix, not burning CDs =(. I always burn at 40x anyway =\.

Krome: This drive worked very well for over a year ^^. Moreover I've had no problems with BenQ media before this. Probably some weird fate lol =P. And sorry, but I'm a male ^^.

panacea: Lol. I'm going to read/write my stuff at 40x from now on. =P

Thanks for all the replies. Thankfully I've a LG4163B in case I need to read/write CDs or DVDs. Very good drive so far =D.
