Internet Explorer 8 Beta to begin later this year

Recommended Posts

One of the members of thehotfix.net forums confirmed that he received a mail from Microsoft saying that the Beta version Internet explorer 8 would be released later this year along with Windows Vista SP1.There is no information on when the exact date would be. However, since mainstream support for XP doesn?t end until April 2009 Microsoft will support IE 8 to Windows XP users.

But in the same way that IE 7 was released, there will be 2 versions: one that is built on the security settings of Vista, and the other one on the settings of XP SP2 or SP3.So it will be a good news for all the Windows XP users who can also use Internet Explorer 8.More information will be provided when available!!!

Nice to see that Microsoft is no longer waiting 5+ years between each major release of IE. I think that if IE8 continues to add better support for web standards, as well as some new and catch-up features, IE will become a very strong browser in its own right.

Why not ask the moderators or Admins to put this on the front page? It is useful to know even if I use Firefox.

you can ;)

Yep, I agree

That member, Tim Mosdell, of thehotfix asked the following a few days before that @ thehotfix:

Does anyone know when Mcorosft plans to start the Internet Explorer 8 beta?

Also, Will IE8 be a Vista only release, or will they port it back to Windows XP users.

and the following a few months before that:

Can someone please send me a link to were I can download the alpha build of IE8 that Microsoft is using internalily. Thanks.

[email protected]

so I wouldn't jump to conclusions immediately about his "email". Also, MS sending out e-mails to a random person about Vista SP1 and IE8? MS don't even want to talk about SP1 in any shape or form unless they absolutely have to and now they're sending out an email that only one person has supposedly received regarding the betas of both?

With Safari joining the competition, they better.

I really doubt MS are worried in any way about Safari. Even after so many years of Firefox being an excellent browser, IE still has a huge market share and I highly doubt that would change a lot with Safari being there. It's more the Mozilla/Firefox crew that are annoyed with the idea that Apple seems to see Firefox and the other open source browsers as not being a part of the future browser market.

I am going to say they are going to use the same thing they used in Office 2007. "Ribbons"

They said they were aiming more for customization. Ribbons aren't that customizable. It would also be quite a shock to have the interface change a SECOND time.

that, and also for the windows explorer in the next verson of windows

who said? Was this offical word from microsoft? or is it that guys blog?

and so what if its changed a 2ed time. BIG WHOOP! does that change what the program actully is? nope

Billyyea, they also said that Vista was going have WinFS and Vista was going to be as great as Longhorn.

They can say a lot of things and not mean it and if they say it, it does not mean it is going to happen. We will see what will happen in time.

I believe it's from IEBlog, but I really don't want to check at the moment. It might've been from an interview though.

And I believe it would be difficult for people to adapt a second time.

I simply don't see ribbons happening. But maybe you do. That's fine. As you said, it's really up to Microsoft in the end.

I think the Ribbons team is working on the Windows UI at the moment though.

Anyone noticed how damn chunky ribbons are? :/

Yep, first thing I noticed! But luckily you can set them to hide so only the tab names are visible until you click on them. Then you click back on the text and it snaps back into mini mode.

If they make it for the Windows Shell could they not just copy it for IE8?

I am trying to start anything, I am just trying to say they might as it is the "new" point of Office 2007, so can't they just port it?

They could indeed port it. However ribbon interfaces aren't the 'be all holy grail'. An example would be PowerArchiver 2007.

A program like IE8, I feel, is better done in strips, because items like the Address bar and Search Box are more elongated and not very tall and would not fill the vertical space left with their addition, or it would get pushed to another line, leaving very few buttons left in IE8. Also IE8 doesn't have that many features that would be immediately relevant in many situations, like as in a Word Processor, and thus would do better to hide advanced stuff in a dialog box somewhere. However, I am in not the team designing the interface, so I honestly don't know what they know (usage statistics and everything).

Also, just because the Office UI team is working on Windows, doesn't mean Windows will look like Office 2007. The Office team designed that UI because they felt it would fit Office, they may design a new one that they feel would fit Windows. In either case, you will probably get a very good shell (because the Office UI designers are SMART people).

I hope that it reminds me of Longhorn! I saw a really good WPF based browser before and it shocked me, its beta and is coming out soon!

PS: It better be blue!

I loved Longhorn. So much better than Vista. Yeah, I don't think IE8 being WPF-based is a stupid thing to say. Very likely.

It would also mean Vista only. I'm wondering if Microsoft has the grounds to do that. It would mean a bit of work if they're going to provde it to XP, if this article is correct.

    • You are clueless. The updates are done in the background so the next time you open Edge the updates are applied automatically. There is no need to close all your tabs. Just keep browsing like you normally do. Clearly you don't use Edge and are just one of those haters that complain for the sake of complaining.
    • I don't get this David. Can you explain it please.
    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
    • Now disable that stupid OneDrive backup request when Windows starts please. So unbelievably frustrating to only have “remind me later” instead of “no and never ask me again”
    • Hello, The Media Creation Tool is still at v10.0.26100.7019 from October 2025. Just looks like the backend has been updated. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
