The company probably pays for the internet connection, and seems to have not effectively prevented its employees from pirating materials (just block either bittorrent connections or keep employees from installing their own software on the machines). So he could download as many copies as he wanted, all Microsoft wants is for you to buy a legal license. By the way, great way to snitch something that is none of your business. The guy was probably just using it for his personal use... Especially when he's in the middle of the store no where near geek squad... where they have their own internet connection.although he really shouldn't be using best buy's connection. Way to assume something and then report it with out knowing all the facts. (Y) Also... thanks for jumping on a computer that you aren't authorized to use. Using warez'd copies of stuff just doesn't happen because: 1) We have plenty of legit copies that the customer can buy 2) We make money when customers buy things Why would be not want to make profit and instead used a warez copy of things?? IMO... those people are nothing more than self-serving 'geeks' who take it upon themselves to do whatever is necessary in order to appease their management. Case-in-point: my brother purchased a new HP laptop last week and part of the purchase agreement was to have the GeekSquad boot the system and set it up so it worked 'smoothly' for him (his words, not mine). When he got the laptop home, booted it up and tried changing his password Windows politely popped up and said it '...could not change the user password.' HUH? I had him look at his account type- he was a member of the admin group. I had him check his folder permissions- he was owner. I had him create a new user with admin rights and that worked. I had him create a password for that user and that failed. He logged out of Windows and logged in as the newly created user and tried making a password and that failed. How is that making his new laptop work the way it should, when a user cannot even create a password? I then came up with a monumental idea: restore from the OEM discs.... Everything worked fine after that. So, GeekSquad does what for users? GeekSquat! Oh, and if you, the reader, happen to work for GeekSquad, if you really want to help people do NOT disable UAC for new computers sold with Vista, do not install Norton or 3rd party software that doesn't come with the computer. You'll only end up hurting your reputation. Make Windows work the way it is, don't change it to make it work the way you think it should. You may think you're helping the end-user, but you're not. You're creating headaches for them and ensuring that the word of mouth references you so badly need aren't going to be forthcoming. ... unless you enjoy raping your repeat customers. Sorry, but this guy's in the wrong. There's no ifs ands or buts about it. If you want the media that badly (Okay - legitimate reason you lost your disc?) then ring MS and get a new copy. As far as I know, it's legal to backup discs for your own use. Guess that argument goes out the window. I highly doubt that a big company such as Best Buy would be pulling this. I mean, if it was some small computer shop, it would not surprise me at all. But Best Buy? Like others are saying, I think he was just using their fast net. Big whoop. Possibly - just possibly - he was getting another copy to use on computers and install them, but using their legit keys. We'll never know. I would only report something like that if I paid for it and received it on my computer (I wouldn't be happy if I paid for something and got a pirated one!)
