Has the price of camera's just dropped?

Recommended Posts

So I was trying to find ways to save up for a Nikon D60, when I looked about a week ago, it was going to be released in March with a price tag of ?650 odd. I see raving reviews about the D80 but at ?780 odd then it was a bit too much for me.

So I get over excited and want to read some more about the D60.

Amazon D60 - ?504 | Digital Review D60 - ?499 (with additional Lens!) | Amazon D80 - ?675.

So did I miss something? The D80 is now in my reach (potentially) although I never really looked into it as I knew I couldnt afford it. Plus, the Digital Review site is offering an additional Lens and ?5 what Amazon is. Unless I am being dumb, but then being completly new to SLRs then I dont really understand what the different lens' actually do.

I have to do a bit of comparison work I think.

Sheesh, you guys in the UK sure are killed on prices. :| :p

That said though, those do look like good prices--DigitalRev and Amazon regularly put up sales.

As for lens, camera manufacturers put up either body only or kit lens coupled. For most people, the kit should be fine (since they now include VR) but others like to pick and choose their lens depending on what they want or already have.

What exactly are you looking to shoot?

Good point.

I guess I am looking to shoot a bit of everything. I live in the countryside, but will be doing a lot more shooting of buildings, rollercoasters, people (not so much of this though) and macro shots. I have done quite a few. I don't know if I am ready for an SLR but I think it is what I need. I went from a Kodak something or other, to a Canon G7, which has helped me understand a lot about cameras, so I think now I have the building blocks to start thinking more about the shots I am taking.

What worries me though is what sundayx said.

The D80 is getting dated. Although it might be a better camera all round (and from that site, very good deals (for the UK!)), I am still unsure as I get the feeling they'll be a D90 out shortly?

I don't understand though how one place can sell it with one lens, and one with another? I thought Nikon just supplied it in the box as standard and that was it? Which lens would be better, 55-200mm or 18-55mm?

:o - Amazon's D60 has dropped again, now ?489. Maybe this is because Amazon aren't selling it, a company is? Yesterday there was only one left. Not that I am complaining, means I can afford it sooner!

:oo again! Digital Review are selling the same as Amazon but it is over ?130 cheape:s:s Someone correct me, these are the same cameras right?

The other thing though, is I know Amazon's packing is quality and my camera will arrive safe and in a big box. Digital Review might stick it in a bag type package or (like another UK Company I used) just stick the delivery sticker on the actual box?!

Hmm

The reason DigitalRev prices are so low is because they're based in Hong Kong. They've been around for a while so I wouldn't think they would scam you as they are on ebay as well. What kills you on the prices from them though is their shipping + VAT. Add an item to your cart and process the shipping to the UK--it's about another 60 pounds so the actual difference from Amazon isn't as large as it seems.

What sundayx is true about the age, but you should not judge cameras based on that. Depreciation of older models are very slow compared to the computer industry and should not be based to judge buying a new camera over the other--especially since the older camera is the better of the two in this case. I wouldn't expect a D90 until late this year at Photokina or early next year. (the kit priced at ?949 starting--under the D300 and above the D60)

55-200 and 18-55 are two different lens for different purposes. 18-55 is general/walkaround lens which covers a wide angle for landscapes/architecture at 18mm and has a reach of 55mm (82.5) for candids or other needs. The 55-200 is telephoto for zooming in on subjects.

If I were to get the 18-55, get it with VR to help you shoot indoors and in low light.

    • The level of stupidity at Google and Microsoft is beyond belief. All they are doing by killing this is forcing people to jump over to Firefox and ditch them all together, therefore giving Firefox the market boost it needs to finally crush them all in the end.
