ok so here it goes. i have a pc with one network-connection, a dslmodem (connected to pc and dsl line), an external hd with NAT and a 5port switch.

how do i connect everything via the switch so i can use the dslmodem (internet), nat external and my pc all in one. a nice paint picture would help if possible :)

Does your DSL Modem have an Ethernet interface?

internet ---> dsl line ---> dsl modem ---> NAT Switch ---> PC

is probably how i would do it, this means you can access both the internet and the HDD via the switch.

make sure the cable from the dsl modem goes into the proper port on the NAT switch (it will probably seperated from the other ports).

some of this might be helpful though so ill leave it

depends completely on your DSL routers setup.

Hardware wise

you will need as follows 3 (straight) patch cables

hardware wise, its quiet simple, connect the dsl modem,pc, and NAS hard drive with to the switch.

Note: the cable your using right now is most likely a crossover cable and will not work with this setup.

Software is slighty more tricky

depending on the operating system your using for instance

windows

Windows -> Start Menu -> Run

type cmd

press enter

type ipconfig /all

press enter

if your IP address for Local Area Connection starts with one of the following

192.

10.

172.

you are on whats known as a private ip range and thats exactly what you want.

MACosX Linux

use spotlight or whatver to find terminal

type ifconfig

press enter

if your IP address for Local Area Connection starts with one of the following

Conclusion

if this is the case , its most likely that when you plug in your NAS harddrive it will be assigned AN address by the DSL router

yours might be something like 192.168.10.1

hard drive might be given 192.168.10.7

the easy way to find it when plugged in is use a program angry ip scanner

you can see the computers which i am able to see on my local area connection

referring to the manual of the nas hard drive

there may be some sort of setup where you may need to use \\192.168.0.7 to access the drive or whatever

it is an external hdd in an enclose that also has NAS :p working now. tranferring a few gb of data onto it as we speak teehee.

i'm getting awfully slow transfer speeds (1-3mb/sec). what might cause this (when copying data) ?

Just remember most isp's only give you 1 ip address. So if you are going to want to connect more pc's at a later time to the internet you will need to buy a router and replace the existing switch with the router.

That's if your dsl modem is in fact only a modem and not a dsl router.

Please post the model numbers of your devices.. I find it almost impossible to believe you have a true DSL modem.. ie one that does not do nat.. You never see those any more.. sure you can put them into bridge mode quite often.. But most of the time they are doing NAT.. ie they are combo/gateway device modem/router combo.

As to a "external hd with NAT" Have no idea what taht is.. Please post a make and model number.

But as already mentioned you connect your dsl router to your switch, and then everything else to the switch.. And everything would be on a private network. IE 192.168.x.x, 172.12-16.x.x, 10.x.x.x

As to why your getting slow speeds? Is your HDD now connected at 10mbit vs 100mbit?

Please post the model numbers of your "modem" and this HDD with NAT. I would take it when you say switch its just a run of the mill 10/100 switch.

Ive heard vista has had trouble with file copy speeds, not sure if SP1 fixed it or not, but if you were getting decent speeds before any your not now, im not sure what the problem could be :unsure:
