Man's fat stops bullet

A 20-stone mugging victim's life was saved in Germany when a bullet fired at him was trapped in his fat.

Rolf Mittelhaus, 49, didn't even notice he'd been shot until he was examined after reporting the attack to police two days later.

"A mugger attacked me and I heard a loud bang but I'd been drinking and didn't really know what was going on. I didn't feel any pain," :huh: he told police in Dortmund.

Medics found the bullet stuck in rolls of fat when it fell out during a routine examination for injuries.

"It had barely pierced the skin and was smothered by all the flesh around it," said a police spokesman.

I remember reading a question in New Scientist asking "how fat would I have to be to be bulletproof". The answer was, concisely, fatter than is possible, but it seems this may dispute that.

A straight shot, I would agree. A glancing shot, especially between two rolls of fat though, would probably stop the bullet (let's note that the same shot, at a thin person, would probably have missed).

No, they'll just require all police officers to have a blood alcohol content over .20 while on duty so if they do happen to get shot they won't feel it. I think him not feeling the bullet has more to do with how drunk he was and less to do with rolls of extra fat.

Surely he must've been shot with a rubber bullet of some kind. It doesn't make any sense at all. There's no way human skin can withstand the impact of a bullet. Getting shot with a measly paintball leaves a nasty bruise on your skin. I'm uber confused right now. :s
