Neither snow, nor rain, nor Rattlesnake ....

NEW TAMPA - A mail carrier is recovering after being bitten by a poisonous rattlesnake that was hidden in a mailbox.

According to Tampa Fire Rescue, 66-year-old Efrain Arango was on his route delivering mail when the bite happened.

Arango said he reached into a mailbox to grab a box inside when the snake bit and latched onto his finger.

He said the snake was an eastern diamondback rattlesnake, about a foot and a half long.

Arango said he had to hit the snake repeatedly before it would let go. He said he wrapped up the wounds on his finger, and continued to deliver mail for about 10 to 15 minutes  before he started feeling sick and realized he would need help.

That's when he drove back to the New Tampa Post Office at 16350 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. and called 911.

He got help within 30 minutes of the bite.

So far, no agency is investigating why the snake was in the mailbox. Experts say it is not uncommon for snakes to crawl into open mailboxes when the ground is wet.

Arango will stay at the hospital overnight, but is expected to make a full recovery. He says he wants people, especially children, to know what happened to him, and to be watchful of their mailboxes.
