Connection Issues

ok guys i got a problem, on my desktop i have a wireless that plugs into the back of my tower but i show and see the network but it wont let me connect to it..anyone have any ideas on this one? and its also Vista on a Dell XPS system

What security are you using? WEP, WPA, WPA2? Or is it just open - what happens when you try to connect to it?

What Wireless channel are you using? - Have you tried changing the channel?

the network is open, and i can see it on one screen. but cant see it to connect to it in the main screen...security is fine, cause i can connect to my laptop, but the desktop wont, but i have restarted the pc and ill have a connection for about 1 min and then gone all over again

how does your other machine connecting to it mean anything, other then you know it works ;) What OS is the other machine running.. At worse case you can be blocked from connecting to an open network, at best you should get warned. Are you using the windows wireless supplicant, or the one for the card your using?

Are you broadcasting the SSID? This can also prevent connecting - because to be honest not broadcasting SSID breaks the RFC.. And wireless clients really should not connect to them.

You really should secure your wireless, wpa2 if all your clients support it - but if not wpa. And you should broadcast your SSID -- this will remove most of the problems you might have with machines connecting.

If using the vista wireless client you have to check to connect to nonbroadcasting wireless network.

And you should get warned that its not secure -- its possible it not being secured could prevent you from connecting, depending on security settings, depending on what supplicant your using, etc. etc.

Probably a misconfiguration of your NIC IP ? are using DHCP or Static Addressing ?

If it's the latter, then make sure you correctly typed in the appropriate IP + Default Gateway + DNS.
