AOL asks staff to volunteer for 2,500 layoffs

AOL Chief Executive Tim Armstrong is lopping off chunks of the struggling Internet company to pretty it up for its spinoff next month.

AOL announced yesterday that it is slashing more than one-third of its staff less than three weeks before parent Time Warner plans to turn the online business into a separate company.

Armstrong is asking for 2,500 volunteers to come forward before the holidays, enticing them with a more generous buyout package if they do. After that, there will be ?involuntary? layoffs for less severance pay.

To soften the blow, Armstrong said he made the ?personal decision? to forgo his bonus this year. Under his three-year contract, he gets $1 million in salary and an annual bonus that is guaranteed to be at least $1.5 million but could go as high as $4 million.

AOL said the job cuts will save about $300 million a year. It will take a $200 million restructuring charge for severance costs. Last week, AOL laid off 100 workers in a separate round of cuts.

The layoffs are part of ?Project Everest? ? a far-reaching restructuring plan that Armstrong undertook shortly after joining the company in March. As the name suggests, he faces a tough climb.

Armstrong is trying to position AOL as a provider of premium online content, hiring well-known journalists and launching new sites in an attempt to increase its audience and draw advertisers.

Meanwhile, more restructuring lies ahead for Armstrong. In addition to job cuts, AOL is said to be eyeing the sale of several businesses, including MapQuest and ICQ, an instant-messaging service.

Armstrong, a former top executive at Google, was brought in to separate AOL from Time Warner after nine tumultuous years. The official separation date is Dec. 9.

When his job is done, AOL either needs to be strong enough to be independent or attractive enough for consolidation.

The company isn?t looking so good at the moment. AOL?s two main businesses ? advertising and Internet access ? are hurting. AOL posted a 23 percent drop in revenue, to $777 million, and lost 438,000 subscribers during the third quarter, leaving it with only 5.4 million.

The company?s search agreement with Google is set to expire next year, while the revenue generated from the partnership is slipping. AOL said revenue from the Google deal fell to $422 million in the first nine months of the year, down from $513 million in the comparable period a year ago.

After this latest round of cuts, the company will be left with about 4,400 workers.

After this latest round of cuts, the company will be left with about 4,400 workers.

So you have a 33% chance of getting laid off (more or less depending what department you work in)... for some people taking the larger severance package might not be a bad idea (im sure a bunch of people know they'll be laid off anyway)

in terms of ways of getting laid off, this isnt bad at all, gives employees time to find another job and if they do, they can take advantage of the buyout package, worst case scenario, they dont and can gamble on not getting laid off. The risks for aol is if most of the company elects for the buyout package and they're left with scrubs.

    • Euro-Office must default to ODF to be considered "genuinely European", LibreOffice argues by David Uzondu Euro-Office is a web-based collaborative office suite that positions itself as a "European sovereign alternative" to American tech companies, backed by a coalition of developers including Nextcloud, IONOS, Abilian, BTactic, OpenProject, and, more recently, Tuta. The project officially went live a couple of days ago, but not before drawing heavy fire from LibreOffice developers, who called the marketing claim that Euro-Office represents the "first open-source office suite developed in Europe" a deceptive historical inaccuracy because projects like OpenOffice and LibreOffice existed decades earlier. Now that the project has launched, LibreOffice is back with another complaint, arguing that Euro-Office cannot consider itself "genuinely European" while it pushes proprietary Microsoft defaults on users. Euro-Office had promised to improve the OpenDocument Format (ODF) back in April, but the current release still plagues users with several technical failures. For instance, the suite lacks an admin setting to enforce ODF, and mobile editors completely block ODF saves, forcing files into Microsoft's OOXML formats. Some configurations force files into read-only mode, while editing frequently corrupts document formatting or erases data. LibreOffice thinks that merely supporting a format as an afterthought does not make you a sovereign alternative, as file formats are the battleground where" digital sovereignty is won or lost." The road to the first stable release of Euro-Office has been quite bumpy due to an aggressive public fallout with OnlyOffice, from which the coalition originally forked the project. OnlyOffice struck back by accusing the coalition of violating copyright terms under its AGPLv3 branding requirements by stripping the original branding anyway and forking the code. Getting Euro-Office up and running is a bit wonky (at least for non-technical users), as there is no direct installer to grab off the web. The easiest way we learnt is by using Docker. First, pull the official Euro-Office image from the GitHub Container Registry: docker pull ghcr.io/euro-office/documentserver:latest Then, run the container with active ports and a secure JWT token, enabling the test environment: docker run -i -t -d -p 8080:80 --restart=always -e EXAMPLE_ENABLED=true -e JWT_SECRET=my_secure_jwt_secret ghcr.io/euro-office/documentserver:latest And finally, open a web browser and go to the following address: http://localhost:8080 If you are running this on a remote server, replace localhost with your server's IP address. You will see the Euro-Office test page, where you can create new text documents, spreadsheets, or presentations directly in the browser. Image via Euro-Office Nextcloud promises that proper standalone desktop versions and mobile apps will arrive in a future release.
