GilgaMesh
Seems like I'm not the only one getting this error as it is trending on twitter. Apparently we just have to keep trying as it a server side error.

Jan Veteran Posted October 12, 2011 Veteran Share Posted October 12, 2011 People are saying airplane mode fixes it, will test in a min. I can confirm, Airplane mode fixes the problem. Enjoy iOS 5 everybody.
GilgaMesh
It seems to be updating now, I just put it into DFU mode and kept hitting restore every time the error appeared. In order to put your device into DFU mode, with the iPad connected to your computer and turned on or off (it doesn't matter), you must press the "home" and "power" buttons together for EXACTLY 10 seconds at which point you must release "power" but continue to hold "home". After about 15 seconds, the device will enter DFU mode.

acnpt
Reboot your phone :) was getting the same thing and wouldn't let me upgrade to 5.0 This worked for me on my iPad earlier, but it could have just been a coincidence.
nominak
What happens when it errors in the middle of being in DFU mode?
Techno_Funky
I got the error as well, I had though used the direct link and downloaded it via a download manager. So used the option key (mac) and clicked on restore rather then upgrade. Worked for me.
Dinggus
Anyone know how to activate your iPhone with no service? In a different country for a few months, but I need my phone activated.
