Developer: Valve Corporation, Hidden Path Entertainment
Engine: Source
Platform: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3
Release Date: Early 2012

Description:

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) is an online first-person shooter based game currently in development by Valve Software and Hidden Path Entertainment, who also co-developed Counter-Strike: Source. It is the fourth game in the Counter-Strike franchise, excluding Counter-Strike: Neo and Counter-Strike: Online.

Global Offensive is targeted for release in early 2012. It will be available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Xbox 360 via the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation 3 via PlayStation Network. It will feature classic content, such as old maps, as well as brand new maps, characters and game modes. Also, it will support matchmaking and leaderboards. Cross-platform multiplayer is confirmed between Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and PlayStation 3 players. The PlayStation 3 version will offer three control methods, which include using either the DualShock 3 controller, PlayStation Move or USB keyboard/mouse. [Source]

Gameplay:

Like previous games in the series Global Offensive is an objective based multiplayer first person shooter. Each player joins either the Terrorist or Counter-Terrorist faction and attempts to complete objectives, or eliminate the enemy team, first. For example in demolition maps, often abbreviated "de", the terrorist team is given an explosive to plant at a designated location. The Counter-Terrorists must defend the location until time runs out, and if the bomb is planted defuse it. Global Offensive is planned to launch with demolition, hostage rescue, and a new game mode called arsenal. Arsenal is based on a popular mod for both Counter Strike and Counter Strike: Source called gun game, and made in collaboration with the creators of the mod.

Global Offensive, like previous installments, operates in short rounds that end when all players on one side are dead or an objective is completed. Once a player dies they must wait until the round ends to respawn in most game modes. Players purchase weapons and equipment with money awarded based on their performance. Completing objectives or killing enemies earns the player money while negative actions like killing a teammate takes money away from the player. In addition when a round ends all players receive some amount of money, with players on the winning team receiving substantially more. Global Offensive adds new weapons and equipment not seen in previous installments. Most notably the molotov cocktail which temporarily covers a small area in fire, making it impossible to pass through without taking significant damage. [Source]

Nice job Anaron.

I just read on Kotaku the Beta (invite only) actually started today as well. (Y)

Thanks! :)

Me too. I figured it was time to make an official thread for the game. I'm really looking forward to it now. I've been a longtime fan of Counter-Strike and I put so many hours into Counter-Strike 1.6. I didn't like Counter-Strike: Source that much so I hope this one is more like 1.6.

The second video I posted above is quite informative.

Good official thread, Anaron :).

The beta gameplay is looking pretty good. I've been itching to get my hardcore PC FPS fix for a while, and my computer is too ****ty to run Battlefield 3  . I wonder if Valve intends on expanding the beta at some point...

Nope. Still looks like de_dust to me.

 Exactly what I was thought to myself when I read the question as well.

And seriously, that guy in the video is playing against the worse team ever. To be able to kill them all basically from behind like that, so shortly into that second round, yeah, they are awful.

Some of them are bots which explains why a few of them barely even shoot at him.

Thanks. (Y) I agree. Initially, I wasn't as interested as I thought I'd be because I assumed the game would be Counter-Strike: Source with a fresh coat of paint. After seeing some videos and reading more about it, the game appears to be a hybrid of Counter-Strike: Source and Counter-Strike 1.6 which is great.

Valve definitely has plans for an open beta. For a game like this, it would be a mistake not to.

Graphics look nice. I really like the UI and how the game displays notifications, like the revenge streak being stopped.

Agreed. Despite the age of the Source engine, it still looks good enough for 2011. And the best part about it is the performance which should be good on most computers. I've never been a fan of radial UIs but from what I've seen, it looks more efficient than the traditional UIs you'd see in previous Counter-Strike games.

Somehow fancy graphics and CS don't go together.

I know when both iterations came out, they were quite there, but I somehow remain attached to CS = rather simple graphics.

(Not in relation, but as in the actual quality)

Wouldn't really call the graphics "fancy." They're pretty keeping with how the series has traditionally looked.

Not in the Farcry sense, don't get me? :/

I just mean that the graphics got better.

I know it's ridiculous to ask for staying with CS:S quality, and actually I'm not calling for it, just saying... :D

You know..?

Ahh, not sure if they said that in the video as I watched it at work with no volume, but that explains it completely.

  • 2 months later...

Last week we launched the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Beta by giving 7,000 keys to current CSS and CS 1.6 players. Monday 2,000 keys went out to community sites around the world.

Today we are opening up our online survey to everyone. The next keys will be sent on the basis of this survey. If you don?t fill it out, you won?t be getting a key.

Over the coming months we will make selections from the survey participants. Sometimes we might add experienced players, other times new players. Sometimes 1.6 players, sometimes CSS players, sometimes people who have played neither.

There are no wrong answers to the survey questions.

Make sure to fill out the survey today; next week we will make our first selection from the survey.

We will also continue to give gift keys to active CS:GO beta players to share with their friends. Earning these keys is easy, hit quick match and play CS:GO.

Check back later this week for our analysis on the recoil change and a new update this Friday.

In case you missed it ? here is a link to the survey.

To those interested in getting into the beta, personally I can wait until release, but really starting to get excited about this game.

Thanks for the heads up. I knew about the survey but it slipped my mind recently. I really hope I get a beta key. Out of all the games I've played in my life, I spent the most time playing Counter-Strike 1.6.

Just finished up the survey a few minutes ago. Battlefield and Call of Duty are getting quite stale and I'm hoping this game will be just the fix I need.

CS has infinite playability I find, if not just for the main gameplay but for the mods and custom maps. That's what Valve games are good for, and what kept me in CS:S until I got TF2.

I played the original for years up till 1.6 and stopped just a few years ago. I never liked CS:S and I'm hoping this game strikes a balance between Source and 1.6.

    • I need to understand the rationale of not shipping all of these K2 improvements in a single update/release. It's giving "we will fix Windows 11 but no commitments". It seems to me that they just announce these improvements just to appease the community.
    • The term "RTM" is long gone starting with Windows 10. Every current release is a GA build. This is the result of MS making Windows as a Service (WaaS).
